Standing Together in the Digital Age
In recent weeks, education has once again taken centre stage in national media, following
renewed attention on cyberbullying and online safety. As conversations about education,
technology and student wellbeing continue to evolve globally, so too does our shared
responsibility to support and protect our young people. Now the genie is out of the bottle, we
have a new context, and we remain committed to being part of the solution. We are all
vulnerable.
From UNESCO’s global campaign, Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation, to
growing national dialogue around artificial intelligence, data privacy for kids, and digital
wellbeing, the message is clear: the digital landscape is shifting rapidly, and it will take a
united effort to keep our children safe and thriving.
Education is not just about preparing students for the future of work, but about preparing them for life. In an age of AI, automation and global connectivity, the most important lessons may not be about technology itself, but about how to live ethically, courageously and compassionately.
To further empower the community and we need everyone’s help, Grammar is hosting internationally recognised cyber safety expert Susan McLean on campus next term. With decades of experience, including extensive knowledge of criminal and civil law as it relates to online safety, Susan will lead a session for parents on Tuesday, 15 July. Register for this free event here.
Parents, carers and Sunshine Coast region and community members are invited to attend this valuable information session, which will cover everything from current online trends and safety risks, to how and when to involve the authorities in the case of harmful or unlawful online behaviour. This is a timely and powerful opportunity for families to ask questions, gain clarity and feel confident in how they can support their children at home.
Young people learn in many ways and through many experiences. Some of the best lessons are learned when they make mistakes. History tells us that young people will make mistakes. The modern hyperconnected world means some of their mistakes are very public, appalling and inappropriate, and often result in serious legal and/or negative, life-changing implications for them and their innocent victims. Unity across all groups in every community is required – a call to arms.
Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s walk beside our young people. And let’s do it together.

We’re thrilled by the excitement at this week’s Orbit Hub at the Kiss and Go drop-off area, where 380 parents downloaded the new app in just the first week! We’re pleased to officially launch our new school platform for parents, designed to enhance how you access and manage school-related information. Developed by TASS, our current Student Information System, this new application—called Orbit—offers a more intuitive, centralised way to stay informed and connected. It replaces our existing Digistorm app, which is no longer available on Google Play and will cease to function from August. Orbit is built around the daily needs of parents, offering simplified access to school news, updates, and tools—including a direct link to GECO. Please download the new app over the holiday period to ensure a smooth transition.
Join us for a walk-through on Thursday, 17 July from 8:00 - 8:30 am or 2:00 - 2:30 pm. Register your attendance via Events Online.

Last week we enjoyed our annual Grandparents Day activities. The day commenced with an encouraging and uplifting Chapel Service. Rev Graham Cole, the PMSA advocate for Christian Ministry, spoke of the importance of not misunderstanding the heart of the Gospel message. This is that God is our loving Father who shepherds us towards him. Therefore, we need not worry and can come to him through Jesus, whether we are worried and burdened or feeling thankful. We also had a wonderful celebration Assembly where we heard about how Grandparents can keep us grounded and anchored to the important things in life in the same way that our School’s faith values do. It is wonderful to know that though we may stray on our faith journey, God is only ever a prayer away.
I am looking forward to long service leave during Term 3 and Mrs Caro Emslie, Mrs Belinda Modlin and Mrs Karen Maguire will do a great job in leading the Christian ministry at Grammar during my absence. All the best to you and your family for a relaxing mid-semester break.
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6:19

Talking to Children About Distressing World Events: Supporting children through difficult conversations
Whether it is through television, online platforms, or overheard adult talk, children often become aware of frightening or upsetting world events. As parents and carers, we may ask ourselves: Should I bring it up? Should I shield them? How do I talk about this without making it worse?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Every child is different, and much depends on their age and temperament. However, here are some principles that can help guide these conversations:
1. Be the Safe Place
It is okay not to have all the answers. Your calm, steady presence is more important than perfect words. When children come to you with concerns - or if you decide to inform them about something – it is helpful to approach the conversation with honesty, clarity, and reassurance. Start by asking what they have heard. This gives you a chance to correct any misinformation and understand what is on their mind. Avoid overwhelming them with too many details.
2. Validate Their Feelings
Whether your child says they are scared, angry, confused, or “fine,” all feelings are valid. Let them know it is okay to feel upset. You might say, “It makes sense that you are feeling this way. Lots of people are feeling like that right now.”
3. Reassure Without False Promises
Children need to know they are safe. Reassure them about the security of their immediate environment and the people who are working to help - emergency responders, peacekeepers and community leaders. Let them know that while bad things can happen, they are surrounded by people who care and will keep them safe. Be careful not to offer promises you can’t keep, like “This will never happen here.” Instead, focus on the systems and routines in place that protect them and your family.
4. Empower with Kindness and Action
When appropriate, you might explore simple ways your child can feel helpful or connected—lighting a candle, saying a prayer, donating items, or learning more about a country or culture. Taking positive action can help children feel less helpless in the face of distressing news. For older children and teens, this might extend to respectful conversations about injustice, compassion, or how change can happen. Remind them that small acts of kindness and fairness in their own lives matter deeply.
5. Limit Exposure and Make Space for Joy
For younger children, especially, try to limit ongoing exposure of distressing events. Having the news constantly playing in the background - on TV, radio, or social media - can amplify fear. Even for teens, constant scrolling can increase anxiety. It is okay to take breaks from the news. Make space for the things that bring comfort and joy: reading, outdoor time, creative activities and spending time together. These aren’t distractions—they are part of helping children feel grounded and safe.
6. Use Age-Appropriate Sources to Support Understanding
Sometimes it is hard to find the right words. Using trusted, child-friendly resources can help explain complex or distressing topics in a way that is developmentally appropriate. Watching or reading something together gives you a shared starting point for conversation and helps your child process information at their level. For example, ABC Behind the News (BTN) offers clear, factual explanations of current events aimed at upper primary and secondary students. You can pause and talk through it together, encouraging questions and offering reassurance along the way.
If you ever feel unsure or if your child seems significantly affected, please reach out to the school wellbeing team. You are not alone in this.
FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the halfway mark of the school calendar. We thank our Grammar parent community for their support and partnership, and our Grammar staff for their impact on learning and life at Grammar for our students.
As always it was wonderful to celebrate our school’s Foundation Day today. Whilst our school continues to grow and flourish, days like our Foundation Day and other traditional events provide us with the opportunity to reflect and be reminded of our roots and what makes Grammar such a great place to be. It was especially rewarding to congratulate long-standing staff recognised, as well as the Lifelong Learners who have moved from Prep to Year 12 at Grammar.
We wish you well for a restful and fulfilling holiday with your families and look forward to seeing you back at school for Term 3 on Tuesday, 15 July.
Academic Reports
A reminder that parents are able to access student Academic Reports in Parent Lounge, through their GECO login.
Comparative marks will be available Week 1 Term 3 on the Year Level GECO page.

This week, 29 students and 5 staff departed for a 9-day tour to Timor. This trip provides our students with an incredible opportunity to learn more about the culture and engage in much-needed community projects in Timor Leste.
During this holiday break, our Netball Girls will compete in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball Competition (QISSN) in Bundaberg. Our two Open Secondary Tennis Teams have qualified for the State final to be held in Brisbane, UQ, on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th July. A number of our students are also competing in the Interschool Queensland State Equestrian Championships from 30th June – 4th July in Toowoomba. We wish all groups well for their respective competitions.
I would also like to remind families that Secondary reports will be available through Parent Lounge in the first week of the school holidays. For Year 7-9, now that continuous reporting is available through GECO, the Semester report will contain an overall grade and the Learning Dispositions. Comments on reports will not be included as staff are writing specific comments for feedback through continuous reporting.
As this is my last newsletter article for 2025, I want to convey my best wishes to all families for the remainder of the school year.

From the Economics Department
Year 11 Economics – Visit from Martin Pennay – Director, Fresh Meats
Recently, our Year 11 Economics classes were fortunate enough to have a visit from Martin Pennay, who is the director of Fresh Meats Maroochydore and a Grammar Dad. He delivered a presentation on the Beef Industry and factors affecting supply and demand in the industry from a domestic and export perspective. Fortunately, our students had just completed an investigation into the economic factors impacting a particular commodity market, with many of the students choosing the beef industry. So, Martin’s presentation as an industry insider added authenticity to their understanding of factors that impact the supply, demand, prices and the outcomes for consumers and producers.
Before the Pennay family started Fresh Meats, Martin had worked around the world in commodities markets and with his economics education and industry experience, he was also able to field questions and offer insight into the broad range of opportunities that studying economics can give our students.
Thank you, Martin for an insightful presentation.

Year 8 History - Medieval Day
This year, as part of their History studies, the Year 8 students have been learning about Medieval Europe and the Vikings, including topics such as the Black Death, the various roles and responsibilities of people from the time, and how and why the Vikings raided parts of England. To complement their studies, the students and their teachers got dressed up and engaged in a number of medieval activities on Thursday, 12 June.
The students watched a presentation from the talented members of Living History Australia. They also took part in a number of hands-on activities such as archery, arts and crafts, an artefact interaction and kubb. Everyone had a fantastic time!

From the English Department
This term, our Year 8 students have been exploring the power of storytelling through the lens of representation and misrepresentation in historical fiction, studying The Boy in Striped Pyjamas and Number the Stars.
Building on the powerful stories, students engaged in workshops with Courage to Care, Queensland, an educational initiative that uses real stories of Holocaust survivors to inspire students to stand up against prejudice, racism and bullying.
We were honoured to welcome Dr Rochy Miller, daughter of Holocaust survivor Lea Leibowitz, known fondly as Bobba, who shared her mother’s extraordinary story of survival. Her memoir, a powerful reflection on trauma, resilience and identity, has been generously donated to our school library. Well done to all students for deepening their understanding of historical fiction and fostering empathy, critical thinking and a greater appreciation for the voices of history.

The recent secondary school athletics carnival was a resounding success, showcasing the talents and sportsmanship of both boys and girls across a variety of events. The day was filled with excitement and energy as students participated in a wide range of athletic competitions, including sprints, long-distance races, jumps, throws, and the highly anticipated age group relays.
The atmosphere was brilliant, with students cheering each other on irrespective of whether the athletes were in. It was pleasing to see the level of support and encouragement among peers, which undoubtedly contributed to some outstanding performances. Several students achieved personal bests, and the relays were a highlight, with teams demonstrating excellent teamwork. The Lawson 12-year-old girls beat all other 12-year-old girls and boys teams by 30m!
We extend our thanks to all the staff members, particularly the House Coordinators, who made this event possible, especially Mr Talbot and Tanya Hoffman. Their dedication and hard work in the lead-up to the carnival and on the day itself were key to ensuring everything ran smoothly. The senior house leaders also deserve a mention. Thank you to everyone.

All teams played an exciting brand of Water Polo, but my team in the finals went up against the Under 15 boys, who played the entire game down two players, yet still managed to nearly secure an upset win, narrowly going down by one goal. FROM THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
Bonjour tout le monde! Join us to celebrate Bastille Day on Friday, 18 July, week 1 next term. There will once again be a special assembly, lots of French-themed activities as well as some yummy treats to buy as we fundraise for the The Library Project Vanuatu.
Primary students from Prep to Year 6 have permission for French-themed free dress (or something red, white and blue), and of course, there will be yummy French delicacies to buy for all students in Years 4-12. There will also be plenty of activities at lunch in the Primary courtyard, being run by our Senior French students and Language Ambassadors. More details will follow in the next few weeks.
Year 8 Japanese Restaurant Excursion
Year 8 Japanese have a unit on invitation language, what better way to celebrate than to receive an invitation to a Japanese restaurant with Sensei. The students enjoyed an authentic dining experience at KatsuCo Maroochydore, putting their language skills to the test as they ordered their meal from the native-speaking staff. Traditional meals like tonkatsu, chicken katsu, Japanese curry and eggplant rice bowls were all a hit! It was a fun and rewarding way to wrap up the semester, full of flavour and authentic language opportunities.

Japanese Taste Testing
This term, our Year 7 Japanese students have been exploring the language used to discuss food, meals, and eating out in Japan. A highlight of the unit has been sampling a range of authentic Japanese dishes and snacks during class time, giving students the opportunity to practice expressing their preferences in real-life contexts. One of the most anticipated moments was our obento experience – a delicious way to bring culture and language together.

Au revoir et un grand merci!
This week, we will say our farewells to our visiting French exchange student, Fanny. She has been with us for the whole of Term 2 and has most definitely fully settled into life at Grammar, from playing volleyball as part of our Year 10 SCISSA team, assisting with Romp in the Forest and joining swim squad training. She has been fortunate to have stayed with amazing host families who have created some incredible memories for her and offered some truly amazing experiences. We would like to acknowledge the Whitehouse and Pennay families for their exceptional care and for welcoming Fanny so warmly. Next term, we will welcome back previous exchange student Faustine, who will return for her second exchange with the current Year 12 cohort. Au revoir, Fanny!

French – “Dégustation” food experience
This term, our Year 7 French students have been learning about the importance of fresh produce markets in French culture and how to buy food and drink items. The term culminated in our French food “degustation” tasting session, where students were able to taste some of the items they had been learning about – from fresh baguettes, brioche, pain au chocolat, pâté and a range of cheeses and traditional French drinks.

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
A Wonderful Season of Music
Over the past few weeks, our school community has enjoyed a fantastic series of music events, each one highlighting the talent, enthusiasm, passion and hard work of our students and staff.
We began with the Large Ensemble Showcase Concert, where all of our ensembles delivered powerful and polished performances. This was followed by the Years 3 & 5 Immersion Open Rehearsal Days, offering families a special glimpse into the musical development of our younger students.
BBQ and Beats brought the community together in a relaxed lunch setting, combining great food with lively student performances, all raising money for a good cause. The Morning Melodies Series, featuring our Strings and Jazz Ensembles, added a beautiful musical touch to the start of the day and was warmly received by all who attended.
A highlight of the term was the inaugural Grammar Rox! Rock Band performance, held last Thursday evening in the Rainforest Cafeteria outdoor area. This exciting new addition to our performance calendar was a great success and promises to become a favourite tradition.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Music Support Group for their ongoing support, particularly with catering and fundraising. Their efforts have helped us purchase new sound and lighting equipment, which has already enhanced the quality of our performances.
We invite all interested families to attend the next Music Support Group meeting on Thursday, 31 July at 6pm, where planning will begin for our upcoming Forest Fest. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Diana Fu at msggrammar@gmail.com.

It was a very busy week here at the Centre with our community events.
We welcomed our Grandparents for a fun activity-packed afternoon on Wednesday, which included joining them in with our weekly music lesson with Miss Jordie.
On Thursday, a special visitor arrived: Recycleman! He told us all about the different coloured bins and what items can be recycled. Recycleman taught us that paper is his favourite thing to recycle, as paper is made from trees, and trees help make the air we breathe. When Recycleman stood up, all his papers fell out of his box onto our heads! We quickly went around to help him pick up all the papers. Recycleman told us that recycling paper will save lots of trees on the planet and, in doing so, will also help make lots of homes for the animals that live in the trees as well.
Meanwhile, Kindy have been using this cool weather to head out and explore the Rainforest area on Campus. They were thrilled to encounter Barry the Bush Turkey, especially after hearing a Bush Turkey story at the Library.
We are pleased to welcome Miss Jayley to the team. Please say hello if you see her around the Centre.
This week, we bid farewell to Miss Cassie and extend our heartfelt best wishes for her continued success in the future.
