Celebrating Mother's Day
As we prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day, I reflect on the importance of connection, the threads that bind us across generations, through challenge and change, through small moments and significant milestones.
This morning, we held our annual Mother–Daughter Breakfast. These mornings are always more than just a shared meal. They’re moments of stillness in a busy world. A time to reflect, to laugh and to maybe even venture into those deeper conversations that don’t always fit into the school drop-off time. These are the moments that shape character, build resilience, and remind our children, regardless of age, that presence matters more than perfection.
As a mother, I know the journey of parenting is anything but predictable. My daughter, Rory, who some of you may know, reminds me daily that strength and independence don’t cancel out the need for connection. Even now, she’ll call to talk through life’s big decisions (whether she takes on my advice is another matter!). Beyond the unpredictable lies something deeper. The bond between a parent and child doesn’t fade with time; it evolves, and it’s in those evolving roles that we find the beauty and strength of parenthood.
I have always loved the phrase, ‘Lift as you climb'. First spoken by African American activist Mary Church Terrell and later echoed by leaders like Angela Davis, it reminds us that our growth is most meaningful when it creates room for others to grow too. It is a phrase we are more likely to use when referring to equity and unity. Whether we’re parents, leaders, colleagues or friends, our success is multiplied when we share it—when we raise the bar and reach back.
To the students, cherish the women who lift you, support you and believe in you. And to the remarkable women in our community, thank you. Your presence, guidance and steady support are gifts your children and our school carry forward every day.
Wishing all of you a meaningful and joy-filled Mother’s Day.

FROM THE P&F
Mother's Day Stall
Our annual Mother's Day Stall was a wonderful celebration of gratitude, as students carefully selected gifts for their mums and mother figures.
The joy on their faces as they chose the perfect present was heartwarming and we know these special gifts will bring smiles just as bright on Sunday.
Thank you to our generous P&F for organising the Stall and providing the opportunity for our students to show their appreciation.
Wishing our mothers and mother figures a wonderful day on Sunday filled with family, love and laughter.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
We are developing a suite of online forms for a range of Grammar documents. We are excited to share the digital Parent Volunteer Form and Student Driver forms.
Accessing the Parent Volunteer Form: In line with our commitment to child safety, we kindly ask all parents to complete this form online each year.
The link and QR code has been added to the P&F page, all co-curricular pages and the main co-curricular page.
Student Driver Form: Student Driver forms are now on the Year 11 and Year 12 GECO pages. Mr Mayall and Mr Robotham will be sharing details with students on this process.
- Open the Student Car Park Online form with your parents and read the Student Driver Policy
- Complete the Student Car Online form with your parent/guardian
- The application will be checked and approved by the Dean of Students
- An approval email will be sent to you once all details are verified
- Students are required to place a Student Decal on the top left-hand side of their windscreen for identification whilst on campus. Students will not be allowed to park on campus without the Student Decal.
Pedestrian Crossings:
The Logistics staff are working hard to ensure safe road crossing and traffic management whilst on campus. To help move cars off and on campus during heavy traffic flow, we will be asking staff and parents to wait at the crossing with students until the team is ready to hold traffic. Please help us to be good role models for our students and support our helpful staff on duty.
To ensure the Kiss and Go junction flows smoothly, we will be ensuring students are crossing at the following designated crossing:
- Oval Access: pedestrian crossing outside the Hall or before the Aquatic Centre car park
- Chapel Access: pedestrian crossing at the roundabout
- GELC/Lake Car Park: pedestrian crossing at the Kiss and Go Junction
Traffic and Parking: Important messages
- Traffic speed on campus is 15km per hour – please slow down.
- Collect Secondary students after 3:15 pm, please do not wait at the Chapel before this time
- Follow directions from the traffic management staff to help support traffic flow
- Parents may wait in a car park on the training oval or in student car parks whilst waiting for children to reach the Secondary pick-up area

I trust all our Mums have a relaxing and enjoyable day this Sunday. At Grammar, we certainly honoured and celebrated Mothers in a range of ways through our Assemblies, Chapels, Secondary Mother-Daughter Breakfast, Primary classroom visits and more. Acknowledging that it may be a challenging day for many because of loss, distance or other reasons, it is such a special day to pay respect and honour the wonderful part that mums play in our lives. Here are some Bible verses and quotes to encourage Mums and all of us.
‘She is clothed with strength and dignity and can laugh at the days to come’. (Proverbs 31:25)
‘As a mother comforts so I(God) will comfort you’. (Isaiah 66:13)
“The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation.” (James E. Faust)
“A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s.” (Princess Diana)
A Prayer for Mothers
Dear Lord Jesus,
We thank you for our Mums - for their guidance throughout life and their never-ending love and support. Thank you for watching over all mothers and may they know how much we appreciate the unconditional love, sacrifice, courage, guidance, and joy they bring to our lives every day. We think today of those Grammar families who are without their mothers and pray a special blessing on them that they would know your peace and comfort. Would you help all of us to strive to be like you and to live out our 2025 Bible verse and be people who are filled with hope, peace and love and joy.
We ask all of this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer from Secondary Mother-Daughter Breakfast – Zenna Pennay, School Vice-Captain
Dear God,
Thank you for this special morning and the chance to sit side by side, mothers and daughters. Thank you for the laughter we’ve shared, the hugs that healed, and the lessons passed down in quiet moments. We are grateful for the bond between a mother and daughter, a relationship that’s built on love, understanding, strength, and sometimes even challenge. Help us to celebrate the beauty of that connection today in every smile, story, and shared memory. May we always hold space for each other, and never take for granted how lucky we are to walk through life together.
Amen.
Primary Family Service
Our annual Primary Family Service is next Sunday, 18 May, in the Grammar Chapel from 4:30 - 5:15 pm. The Service will feature the Dolce choir and be student-led. Grammar families are very welcome to join us.
For Secondary families, our annual Family Service is in Term 3 on Sunday 24 August 24 at 4:30 pm.

FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
Whilst the start of Term 2 has been a little disrupted with Public Holidays, it has still been very productive. While there is always a strong focus on learning in the classrooms, there have been some great opportunities for students outside the classroom. The past two weeks alone have seen students competing or participating in da Vinci Decathlon, Year 3 Sea Life Excursion (see below a recount of the excursion by student Harry M), Sunshine Coast Independent Primary Heads Association (SCIPHA) Chess Tournament and the Japanese Children’s Day Assembly and activities. We extend our thanks to everyone who has been involved in planning and supervising students at these events.
Staffing
Mrs Kim Cordiner met with me recently to advise of her intention to retire from Sunshine Coast Grammar School, and will not be returning as the teacher of Prep AC. Mrs Cara Archer will remain as the Prep AC Classroom Teacher for Semester 2. We thank Mrs Archer for continuing in this important role.
Mrs Cordiner will leave the school following 23 years as a Classroom Teacher. We thank Mrs Cordiner for her dedicated commitment to Grammar and wish her all the best for the future.
Next week, as mentioned in an earlier newsletter, Mrs Rachelle Brutnell, Dean of Primary Prep to Year 2, will be taking leave for the remainder of Term 2. Mrs Jessica Richards will be covering her during this time. Mrs Elisha Curry will be teaching 1JR.
We wish Mrs Brutnell all the best for her leave.
Mother's Day Events
Thank you very much to the P&F and volunteers for our annual Mother’s Day Stall. Students loved the opportunity to independently select and purchase gifts for their mums.
Today, Prep to Year 2 mothers and friends were invited to a special afternoon celebrating the mothers and mother figures in our lives. Teachers and students welcomed our guests into their rooms for a range of activities, mostly directed towards spoiling our mums.
All the best to every mum this Sunday.
Craig Angel
Head of Primary School
FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY
Whilst this week is another short week, it has been a very busy one with a large number of events filling our calendar. The second round of our parent-teacher interviews took place on Tuesday, and it was pleasing to see so many secondary families in attendance.
The most significant event this week for our students was the Regional da Vinci Decathlon that was hosted here at Grammar.
On the sports front, we hosted the Qld Waterpolo Championships and a large number of our students, both girls and boys, participated in netball and rugby competitions.
Our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students also undertook their Qualifying Adventurous Journey, camping out and hiking for two nights, under the watchful eyes of Mr Clint Bullock and Mr Rohan Young, as well as Mrs Jennifer Harsch.
I hope that all the mothers have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday.
Mr Darren MacLeod-Paterson
Head of Secondary
FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS
Term 2 is always extremely busy and brings a vibrant energy that fills our school grounds. It is truly a joy to witness our students engaging so wholeheartedly in their learning and extracurricular activities.
In the midst of this busy term, I seek your support in reinforcing our school uniform expectations. A neat and tidy appearance not only reflects our school's values but also instils a sense of pride and discipline in our students. Please support us in ensuring that your children adhere to the uniform guidelines, as this is a small yet significant way to contribute to our school's ethos.
Winter Uniform
Term 2 and 3 sees the commencement of ‘Winter uniform’. On days when a student is required to wear a formal uniform as per their timetable, all students must wear their blazers to and from school each day. Ties are to remain on all day.
Please note – as the weather cools, when wearing the formal uniform, students may wear the green jumper, their blazer, or both for extra warmth. The blue sports fleece is only permitted to be worn with the sports uniform.
Year 12 students have been advised that they must wear blazers to and from school, however, once on site may wear their Senior jersey.
General Uniform Matters
Please assist staff with ensuring that your children have all necessary uniform items, that fit appropriately, and are named. Common issues to check include:
Girls
- Formal dress length should fall to the knee
- Sports shorts should be loose fit to the mid-thigh – the waistband is not to be rolled
- Ear-rings – one pair only of plain gold or silver, sleepers or studs in the lower lobe
- No other jewellery
- School socks only
Boys
- Formal shirts – long enough to remain tucked in
- Black leather belt to be worn with grey shorts or grey pants
- Clean shaven
- School socks only
Haircuts
Haircuts should be conservative and not attention-seeking. Shaving a ‘stripe’ around the ears in ‘mini-mullet’ fashion is not permitted.
I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage our students to focus on doing the little things well. Whether it's being punctual, completing homework diligently, or showing kindness to a peer, these small actions collectively shape their character and prepare them for life beyond the school gates.
Additionally, this term we will be placing an added focus on respecting our beautiful school grounds and taking care of our facilities. Our environment plays a crucial role in our learning experience, and it is our collective responsibility to maintain it. I encourage all students to take pride in their surroundings and to contribute to keeping our school clean and well-maintained.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we can ensure that our students thrive in a nurturing and respectful environment.
Dan Robotham
Acting Dean of Students

da Vinci Decathlon
What an extraordinary week we’ve had here at Grammar. This year marked our third time hosting the Regional da Vinci Decathlon. Over two action packed days, we welcomed 82 teams (more than 650 students) from 17 schools spanning the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba, and the Gold Coast.
It was wonderful to witness such bright, enthusiastic minds in action as students competed in challenges across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code-breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy. This event is more than just a competition — it’s a celebration of learning, curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.
Our Year 5 & 6 teams competed on Wednesday and were outstanding ambassadors for our school. They navigated the day with great spirit, working collaboratively, creatively, and effectively. On Thursday, the competition continued with 52 teams from Years 7 to 10, each bringing a high level of academic rigour and friendly competition. We were proud to see our students perform so well, placing across multiple disciplines.
As we look ahead, we are excited to be sending a team of students from Years 5 to 11 to represent Grammar at the State da Vinci Decathlon at BBC in two weeks. We know they will do us proud.

Students from Years 8, 9, 10 and 12 had the unique opportunity to dive into the world of advanced composites during a hands-on workshop led by Joe Bryant from Aeromech.
The workshop introduced students to the fascinating process of creating carbon fibre components, which is an essential material in modern aerospace engineering due to its strength, lightweight properties and durability. Joe guided the students through every step, from layering the composite sheets to the crucial baking process that solidifies the structure.
Bringing this workshop to the school marks a milestone in hands-on STEM education. It offered students a rare glimpse into industry practices while nurturing their passion for innovation.
Well done to all students.

Basketball
Through our strong partnership with Rip City Basketball, we were incredibly fortunate to host the New Zealand Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns on Thursday night as they prepared for their matches against the Australian Boomers and Opals at UniSC. Thank you to our Grammar staff and Year 10 girls who helped prepare the courts, and to Head Coach Jason Brooks and Mr Archer for creating this opportunity.

Cross Country
Primary Cross Country Carnival
On Thursday, 22 April, Sunshine Coast Grammar Primary School held its annual House Cross Country, and despite the rainy weather, it was a tremendous success. The day was filled with excitement, fun, and a strong sense of community as students, staff, and parents came together to support our young athletes.
Sturt House emerged victorious, claiming the Championship trophy with outstanding performances from their runners. Meanwhile, Chisholm House was awarded the Spirit Cup, showcasing incredible enthusiasm and house spirit throughout the day.
The event highlighted the importance of participation, perseverance, and teamwork, with students cheering each other on and celebrating every achievement. It was a day that truly embodied the spirit of our school community, and we look forward to more such events that bring us all together.
Congratulations also to our Age Champions and Runner-up Age Champions.

Independent District Carnival
Following two excellent cross-country carnivals in week 1 of Term, we wish the following competitors every success as they represent Grammar at the Independent District Carnival next week. Not only will these competitors give their best for the school, they will also be looking to gain selection in the Independent District Team to compete at the Sunshine Coast Regional Carnival. Go Grammar!

Congratulations to all of our riders on their fabulous achievements.

Grammar Run Club
Olympian Juan Van Deventer leads the Grammar Run Club on Monday mornings on the training oval at the top of the school from 7.00 - 7.45am.
It was so great to see so many new students and parents at the Grammar Run Club. These sessions are open to all staff, students P-12 and their parents. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with members of the Grammar community, get fit and have fun in a supportive environment. All abilities are welcome!
In addition, Level 3 Sprint Coach and parent Lee Batchler is delivering speed sessions for interested students. There is a focus on field and court athletes. This will run alongside the regular fitness session, so runners have a choice!
Mountain Biking
Earlier this term, Charlie F competed in Round 2 of the Renegade Gravity Enduro series (a six-round series event covering South East QLD). Round 2 was held in Stanthorpe. Charlie took out the win for the U19s category, being the quickest on all six stages of the course. So impressive, well done, Charlie!

FOOTBALL
U13 Lions
The U13 Lions have kicked off their 2025 season with impressive form, despite the challenging weather conditions that have impacted the competition schedule. With persistent rain causing several games to be postponed, the team has had to adapt quickly, and they’ve done so brilliantly.
So far, the Lions have played five matches and come away with four strong wins, a testament to the players’ teamwork and growing understanding of the game. Their early performances during the grading phase were also rewarded with a promotion to Division 2, where tougher and more competitive fixtures await.
The team spirit has been excellent, with players getting to know each other better both on and off the pitch. As they continue to develop their skills and match awareness, the Lions are shaping into a cohesive and confident unit ready to take on the season ahead.
With more challenges on the horizon, the U13 Lions are excited to test themselves further and continue learning in this competitive league. Rain or shine, they’re ready to roar.
U8 Athletic Roar
Our Grammar Athletic U8 soccer team have lived up to every bit of their name — with relentless energy, grit, and a burning desire to win. Despite a stop-start beginning to their season due to wet weather, this determined group of boys have not lost any momentum, nor have their spirits been dampened. Their latest triumph, a dominant 4–0 victory over Suncoast FC U8W Stars, keeps their undefeated start to the season intact.
Week after week, our U8 Athletic boys show remarkable commitment to improving their football skills and their understanding and knowledge of how to play this great game. Our team's focus right now is on maintaining our structure on the pitch, progressing the ball through the wide channels, and capitalising on 2v1 scenarios as they present themselves in the game.
With such heart and hunger displayed in every training session and game day, there’s no doubt that this team of 14 passionate boys has an exciting season ahead. This is surely the team to watch in 2025. Go U8 Athletic!

It has been an exciting few weeks as the 2025 Club Netball season is well and truly underway. Well done to all teams who have started the season strong with enthusiasm and some fantastic results! This season, we are thrilled to have 175 netballers registered across 18 teams with students from grades 1-12 participating, which is a testament to the growing interest and passion for netball here at Grammar.
All are welcome to cheer on our Grammar teams each week at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association Courts on Saturdays.

Academy
Our Academy Netballers have continued to work hard, rain, hail, or shine!
Our students have been fortunate to learn from the experienced professionals and coaches, including Sunshine Coast Lightning Physiotherapist, James De Leijer who shared his expertise with our students. On Thursday, we welcomed back Gabi Simpson virtually to guide our Academy netballers through a growth mindset workshop, to equip them with the skills necessary to excel both on and off the court.

School
Our Monday Night netballers continue to represent Grammar with pride in the Secondary School Netball Competition each week. We invite all our school community members to come out and show their support for our teams. Matches are held every Monday evening at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association. It’s a fantastic opportunity to cheer on our talented players and witness the teamwork and sportsmanship on display.

FROM THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
Japanese Children’s Day celebration
Alumni visit – Mia Levings
On the last day of last term, we were thrilled to welcome back past student Mia Levings to talk to some of our French classes about her experiences as a French learner. Mia shared her journey as a French student at Grammar from Year 4, her decision to undertake a six-month exchange to Aurillac in Year 10 and how this ended up shaping her study and career pathway. Enrolled upon graduation to study law at UQ, she decided that the timing was not quite right and undertook a role as an au pair for a family in the south of France. Having decided to remain in France, she then undertook a degree in Fashion Management in Paris at a private university before successfully completing her Masters in French. Her internships with flagship companies such as Maison Michel (part of Chanel), Yves Salomon and Nina Ricci led to her recently securing her current permanent position in Business Development with Louis Vuitton in Paris.
There were certainly plenty of questions from the students about Mia’s pathway and current role and we are excited to see her involvement with the launch of the new cosmetics line come to fruition at its launch later this year.
We are incredibly grateful for Mia giving up her family holiday time to join us and can’t wait to meet up again next year when we are in Paris. Bravo Mia!

Japanese Children’s Day 2025 “Arigatou gozaimasu!”
Last Friday, our school came alive with the colour, rhythm and joy of Japanese culture during our annual Japanese celebration day. The theme for 2025 was festivals, and our event was titled - Gura Gura Matsuri – delivered just that! From a vibrant assembly that transported our audience to a Japanese street festival to exciting lunchtime activities and delicious hot ramen in Secondary, the day was bursting with cultural experiences.
A huge thanks to our amazing music department for their dynamic contributions. We also applaud our Language Ambassadors, Liv and Toby, for their creativity, leadership and enthusiasm both in the lead-up and on the day. Finally, we are immensely proud of the entire Senior Japanese class of 2025, who brought 100% energy, from dressing up and dancing at assembly to coordinating a wide variety of activities across the school!

Anzac Day
During our school’s annual ANZAC Day Assembly, our French and Japanese Ambassadors joined in laying wreaths, paying tribute not only to those who served but also the lasting friendships now shared between Australia, France and Japan. Lest we forget.

ANZAC Day
The Bel Canto Choir delivered a stirring and heartfelt performance at the Mooloolaba Dawn Service on ANZAC Day, moving the gathered crowd with powerful renditions of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems, as well as traditional hymns. We have had an amazing past 2 weeks at Grammar ELC! All our rooms were buzzing with creativity, cultural exploration and hands-on fun.
To celebrate Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi) in Japan on May 5th, our Kindy 2 kids enjoyed the sweet story of The Origami Heart. Inspired by its message, they made their own lovely heart-shaped origami. This special day in Japan is all about celebrating kids' health, happiness and growth. It was a wonderful way for us to dive into another culture and enjoy some creative fun.
In Toddler 2, the children’s love for animals led to a fantastic sensory adventure. The children created cool habitats using green sand for land animals and blue water with shells for sea animals. They had a blast sorting the animals and chatting about where they live and what makes them special. It was a fun and educational activity that sparked lots of great conversations and curiosity!
Nursery 2 took advantage of the beautiful autumn weather with some delightful outdoor dining. Morning tea under the open sky was a refreshing change and a perfect way to recharge for more fun learning experiences.
Meanwhile, Junior 2 had a flying start to their week! During indoor play, the children were drawing when they got the idea to turn their drawings into paper aeroplanes. They took their creations outside and had a blast racing them through the sky, giggling and practising their gross motor skills.
Our Kindy 3 friends were excited to play with a fresh batch of vibrant purple playdough! Playdough play is great for developing fine motor skills, language, creativity, and sensory exploration. With the help of some tools, the kids' imaginations soared as they rolled, chopped, made burgers, and even wrapped pretend presents.
We also took time to honour the servicemen and women on Anzac Day. Our Nursery and Kindy friends engaged in meaningful activities to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those who served. Using fragrant rosemary, a symbol of remembrance from the Gallipoli peninsula. The kids created unique artworks by dabbing rosemary sprigs in green paint and printing onto silver paper. The results were beautiful, personal, and deeply expressive.
Weeks like these remind us just how much learning, discovery and heart can be packed into each day. From culture and commemoration to sensory play and spontaneous creativity, our children are growing and thriving with every experience.
