SPORT NEWS

FROM THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT

Basketball

Through our strong partnership with Rip City Basketball, we were incredibly fortunate to host the New Zealand Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns on Thursday night as they prepared for their matches against the Australian Boomers and Opals at UniSC. Thank you to our Grammar staff and Year 10 girls who helped prepare the courts, and to Head Coach Jason Brooks and Mr Archer for creating this opportunity.

Cross Country

Primary Cross Country Carnival

On Thursday, 22 April, Sunshine Coast Grammar Primary School held its annual House Cross Country, and despite the rainy weather, it was a tremendous success. The day was filled with excitement, fun, and a strong sense of community as students, staff, and parents came together to support our young athletes.

Sturt House emerged victorious, claiming the Championship trophy with outstanding performances from their runners. Meanwhile, Chisholm House was awarded the Spirit Cup, showcasing incredible enthusiasm and house spirit throughout the day.

The event highlighted the importance of participation, perseverance, and teamwork, with students cheering each other on and celebrating every achievement. It was a day that truly embodied the spirit of our school community, and we look forward to more such events that bring us all together.

Congratulations also to our Age Champions and Runner-up Age Champions.

Independent District Carnival

Following two excellent cross-country carnivals in week 1 of Term, we wish the following competitors every success as they represent Grammar at the Independent District Carnival next week. Not only will these competitors give their best for the school, they will also be looking to gain selection in the Independent District Team to compete at the Sunshine Coast Regional Carnival. Go Grammar!

Equestrian

The South East Queensland Regionals were held at Caboolture over the weekend and we had 10 riders competing at the event. Congratulations to Mia, Cassidy, Jorja, Estelle, Gracie, Finn, Amelia M, Charlotte and Birdie for their fabulous achievements. As our riders are competing out of their region, they don’t get awarded placings but they do receive qualifying points that are required to qualify for State Championships.

  • Charlotte has now qualified for States in Combined Training and 80cm and 90cm Show jumping.
  • Estelle competed for the first time for Grammar on her new horse Kalimna Lanza and received a qualifier in the Intermediate Preliminary Dressage 1.3.
  • Amelia M and Revelwood Noble Touch also picked up two State qualifiers in the Primary Prelim Dressage 1.1 and 1.2.
  • Finn had two novice tests on Jabbarwocky and received brilliant results as a practice for States, as she already has her qualifiers.
  • Birdie had a fabulous debut weekend on Kracker Jax and got her qualifiers for CT80 and has 2/3’s of her qualifiers for Preliminary Dressage.
  • Gracie and her horse Teeky, competed in CT, and 60 and 70cm showjumping, achieving their best dressage score yet and gaining another qualifier for the 60cm CT.

Georgia competed in the Fraser Coast Interschool competition over the weekend. She came 2nd in the 90cm Showjumping on Macca and 5th in the 1m, placing 3rd in the overall in. She placed 5th in the 80cm and 7th in the 90cm Showjumping on Prince.

Cassidy and her new horse Red attended the Fairholme Interschool Dressage and Showjumping competition in Pittsworth last weekend. They rode in the Showjumping 1.10m and were 2nd in the Special Two Phase and 1st in the AM5. They were awarded Secondary 1.10m Champions, which is a wonderful result for Cassidy on a new horse.

Congratulations to all of our riders on their fabulous achievements.

Grammar Run Club

Olympian Juan Van Deventer leads the Grammar Run Club on Monday mornings on the training oval at the top of the school from 7.00 - 7.45am.

It was so great to see so many new students and parents at the Grammar Run Club. These sessions are open to all staff, students P-12 and their parents. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with members of the Grammar community, get fit and have fun in a supportive environment. All abilities are welcome!

In addition, Level 3 Sprint Coach and parent Lee Batchler is delivering speed sessions for interested students. There is a focus on field and court athletes. This will run alongside the regular fitness session, so runners have a choice!

Mountain Biking

Earlier this term, Charlie F competed in Round 2 of the Renegade Gravity Enduro series (a six-round series event covering South East QLD). Round 2 was held in Stanthorpe. Charlie took out the win for the U19s category, being the quickest on all six stages of the course. So impressive, well done, Charlie!

  • Hunter F was also selected but unable to compete.
  • Charlie R (13-15 years) and Miller H (16-18 years) were unlucky not to progress to the quarter-finals
  • Ashton B (16-18 years), Maverick H (16-18 years) and Mack B (16-18 years) all progressed
  • Mack continued his fine form throughout the day and claimed second place in the final and earning selection in the Independent District team to compete at the Regional Carnival.

It is fantastic to have many talented surfers represent Grammar. Well done to all students.

Triathlon

Addison H competed at the Oceania Elite Super Sprint Triathlon on the Gold Coast over the weekend. She was the youngest competitor across a field of 35 Elite women from Australia, NZ, Ireland and Great Britain. After a strong heat and semi-final, Addison qualified for the A Final, having to take the start line beside 3 Olympians.

Addison swam, rode and ran brilliantly, finishing 9th, and was the 5th fastest Australian woman, finishing just 1 second behind 2024 Paris Olympian Ainsley Thorpe from NZ. Addison achieved the 3rd quickest run time from all competitors – simply amazing!

FOOTBALL

U13 Lions

The U13 Lions have kicked off their 2025 season with impressive form, despite the challenging weather conditions that have impacted the competition schedule. With persistent rain causing several games to be postponed, the team has had to adapt quickly, and they’ve done so brilliantly.

So far, the Lions have played five matches and come away with four strong wins, a testament to the players’ teamwork and growing understanding of the game. Their early performances during the grading phase were also rewarded with a promotion to Division 2, where tougher and more competitive fixtures await.

The team spirit has been excellent, with players getting to know each other better both on and off the pitch. As they continue to develop their skills and match awareness, the Lions are shaping into a cohesive and confident unit ready to take on the season ahead.

With more challenges on the horizon, the U13 Lions are excited to test themselves further and continue learning in this competitive league. Rain or shine, they’re ready to roar.

U8 Athletic Roar

Our Grammar Athletic U8 soccer team have lived up to every bit of their name — with relentless energy, grit, and a burning desire to win. Despite a stop-start beginning to their season due to wet weather, this determined group of boys have not lost any momentum, nor have their spirits been dampened. Their latest triumph, a dominant 4–0 victory over Suncoast FC U8W Stars, keeps their undefeated start to the season intact.

Week after week, our U8 Athletic boys show remarkable commitment to improving their football skills and their understanding and knowledge of how to play this great game. Our team's focus right now is on maintaining our structure on the pitch, progressing the ball through the wide channels, and capitalising on 2v1 scenarios as they present themselves in the game.

With such heart and hunger displayed in every training session and game day, there’s no doubt that this team of 14 passionate boys has an exciting season ahead. This is surely the team to watch in 2025. Go U8 Athletic!

Club

It has been an exciting few weeks as the 2025 Club Netball season is well and truly underway. Well done to all teams who have started the season strong with enthusiasm and some fantastic results! This season, we are thrilled to have 175 netballers registered across 18 teams with students from grades 1-12 participating, which is a testament to the growing interest and passion for netball here at Grammar.

All are welcome to cheer on our Grammar teams each week at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association Courts on Saturdays.

Academy

Our Academy Netballers have continued to work hard, rain, hail, or shine!

Our students have been fortunate to learn from the experienced professionals and coaches, including Sunshine Coast Lightning Physiotherapist, James De Leijer who shared his expertise with our students. On Thursday, we welcomed back Gabi Simpson virtually to guide our Academy netballers through a growth mindset workshop, to equip them with the skills necessary to excel both on and off the court.

School

Our Monday Night netballers continue to represent Grammar with pride in the Secondary School Netball Competition each week. We invite all our school community members to come out and show their support for our teams. Matches are held every Monday evening at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association. It’s a fantastic opportunity to cheer on our talented players and witness the teamwork and sportsmanship on display.

Other Netball News

Congratulations to our Director of Netball, Shannon Eagland, who was recently selected as Vice-Captain of the Sunshine Coast Lightning Bolts SN Reserves team. In addition, round 1 of the HART Premier League season commences this weekend, with Head Coach-Netball, Layla Bahgat, in the role of Assistant Coach to the Rubies team.

We are proud to have our Grammar staff involved in the Netball Queensland pathways.

RUGBY

All Saints Q7s

U16 and U18 girls' rugby teams showcased outstanding skill and resilience at the prestigious All Saints Q7s tournament in Coomera, Gold Coast. Competing in Division 1 against some of the strongest rugby programs in Queensland, both teams delivered impressive performances.

In a thrilling grand final, our U18 girls secured a historic victory against King's College, which has long dominated the competition. With a final score of 24-22, the match was a nail-biting contest.

The U16 girls also put up a strong fight throughout the tournament, earning their place in the grand final against King's College. Despite losing 26-12, the team showed great promise and determination, highlighting the bright future ahead for Grammar’s girls rugby program.

Congratulations to all the players, and to the coaches Hosea Gear, Ryan Papahatzis and Carey Warhurst, for their hard work and support during the day. This tournament has been a valuable experience, and we are very proud of the achievements of both teams.
