Strong leadership begins at home
The research reminds that the relative ‘health’ of every person’s supportive relationships, particularly within family and across friendship groups, often aligns with positive self-esteem. A strong, nurturing social and family network is foundational to living well.
We are all role models for our students and children – It takes a village
Grammar is fortunate to have many highly regarded and experienced leaders within our community. These leaders demonstrate for us that their time and energy are valuable resources and prioritise their family and friends, however, they also stress the importance of prioritising their work. They describe how this assists them in maximising their impact and productivity. They develop strategies to ensure they focus on the most critical tasks to maximise their abilities at the right time.
Reflecting on our guest speakers and great leaders, I am always amazed by how their day jobs often showcase their best personal assets and characteristics. They are living examples that values, personal strengths and characteristics strike a balance between work and home, defining a great life of leadership. They stay grounded in their values and identity, carrying a quiet, humble confidence. They lead at work much like they do at home—by sharing a clear vision, motivating others, and fostering collaboration, seamlessly aligning personal and professional leadership. They value rest, exercise, and mental well-being to enhance focus and decision-making, and they practise the rare skill of being truly present. In doing so, they lead with purpose and effectiveness, setting a powerful example of leadership and 'adulting' for the next generation.
Strong leadership across the Sunshine Coast begins at home
Living well means aligning work and life authentically, anchored by purpose, values, and connection. Across the Coast, we see this in action through exceptional leaders in operations, infrastructure, education and politics—Emma Thomas, Professor Helen Bartlett, Anna Jackson, Amanda Yeates and Cr Rosanna Natoli—who have all been speakers or are future speakers at our International Women’s Day Breakfasts and exemplify balance, strength, and integrity. Their leadership reminds us that true impact starts in our homes and communities, lifting others as they climb.

President
Recently, we enjoyed our annual Primary Family Service in the Grammar Chapel. The Service was led by students with over 100 people in attendance. We were fortunate to hear some stunning musical items from the Dolce Choir. Thank you to Mr Eastwood and Ms Bradbury for your leadership, exemplifying where passion meets purpose.
Our theme was ‘The Power of the Holy Spirit.’ We heard how Superman is immensely strong, both in terms of muscle power and the ability to take physical punishment. However, unlike God, he is not all-powerful. God’s power is called omnipotence, meaning all-powerful, and that He has unlimited power. We focused on the power of our words, the power of sin and regret, the power of forgiveness and grace, and the power of prayer. It is so encouraging to know that we can have this same power by being filled with the Holy Spirit through Jesus.
"‘He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." Isaiah 40:29

FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
As we move into Week 6 of Term 2, we have seen a great deal of co-curricular highlights in the past few weeks. In class, students are completing a number of their class assessments as we proceed into the reporting process at the completion of the term. Year 3 has completed a successful excursion and Year 4 has their Living History incursion next week, both of which add real-life experiences to their Science and Humanities learning.
It was wonderful to come together as a Primary School community last Sunday and attend the Primary Family Chapel Service. Thank you to Pastor Taylor for the uplifting service, to the Dolce Choir for an outstanding performance, and to those families who were able to join us for the afternoon.
This week, our Year 5 and 6 teams represented Grammar, competing in the State da Vinci Decathlon at Brisbane Boys’ College. I am proud to report that our Year 6 team placed first in Creative Producers, performing to participants and visitors at the end of the day before the presentations. Both teams competed admirably against stiff competition. We thank Mrs Brenda Gahan, Head of Extended Learning, for all her work preparing and supporting students for this exciting competition.
Camps and Excursions
A reminder to parents that we are no longer utilising EdSmart for Camps and Excursions permissions in the Primary School. To make communication between school and parents more streamlined, we have consolidated our communication, with all information and parent approval for Camps and Excursions now made available through Parent Lounge.
Parents will receive notifications when there is an event to approve. We ask that parents please check in on a regular basis to ensure all approvals are up to date.
Romp in the Forest
On Tuesday, 20 May, we welcomed our Kindy to Year 2 students for our 13th annual Romp in the Forest to celebrate our youngest learners. This year’s theme, “Science – Unleash the Scientific Thinking Through Play!”, invited our young explorers to dive into the fascinating world of discovery.
From twisting tornadoes to magnetic magic, we sparked imaginations and encouraged big questions from our smallest scientists. Thank you to all teachers and support staff who helped make the event such a success with engaging and inspiring activities for our students.

This week is Volunteers Week, which shines a light on the selfless efforts of individuals who give their time, skills, and compassion to support our school and make a positive impact on the lives of our students. Our rich co-curricular programs and heavily supported by volunteers and the basic premise of giving back is constantly role modelled to our students. I want to extend my sincere thanks to all our volunteers for countless hours of service you provide to our school community.
On Wednesday this week, our amazing Year 10 Hospitality class under the tutelage of Ms Kennelley and Ms Olsen participated in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. The food was divine, the students did an incredible job catering for such a large number of hungry secondary students.
Several students also participated in the State finals of the State da Vinci Decathlon this week at Brisbane Boys College. This competition saw our teams compete against the very best in the state and we look forward to celebrating their accomplishments.
Today, Grammar hosted for the first time the RoboCup, which saw 150 students compete in the Robot-sumo competition. which sees robotic competition inspired by traditional sumo wrestling. Congratulations to Mr Justin Pembroke for organising such an incredible event for our students.

FROM THE HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT
Earlier this month, Year 8 Geography classes spent a day at Buddina and Maroochydore, conducting fieldwork on the beach and investigating coastal management processes. They completed field sketches, measured longshore drift and constructed beach profiles and were able to observe the council’s sand management techniques at the mouth of the Maroochy River.
The students conducted themselves with great maturity and enjoyed being out in the field to see Geography in action!

Year 10 Geography students travelled to Wynnum recently, where we met with Aimee from the Moreton Bay Environmental Centre, ready for a day on the water to study the impact of plastic pollution on Moreton Bay.
We boarded the Inspiration and then carried out fieldwork activities to collect data about marine debris using a plankton trawl. Samples were then studied under microscopes in order to identify species and look for evidence of microplastics. We also spent time on the Wynnum foreshore conducting a rubbish audit, with the data collected contributing towards a larger study of marine debris within Moreton Bay.
Students have begun working on field reports, which make use of the observations and data collected on the excursion. These reports will contribute to their Semester Two result for Geography.
Thanks go to Ms Layla Bahgat, the students’ teacher, for her assistance in organising the excursion and her involvement and leadership on the day.

SCIPHA Chess Tournament
On Friday, 9 May, a group of talented chess students represented Sunshine Coast Grammar School at the annual SCIPHA Tournament for Independent Schools, held at Suncoast Christian College.
Three teams proudly competed: one in the Novice Division and two in the Open Division, demonstrating patience, strategy and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was wonderful to observe their quiet focus, analytical thinking, and genuine joy for the game of chess.
In the Open Division, the team of Alyna A, Agam S, Ben W and Harrison S finished 4th. In a very tight finish, they were only 1 point behind 3rd and 1.5 behind 2nd.
The team of Xavier F, Vivin M, Edward W and Evelyn H were also close behind,d finishing 5th.
Our youngest players also did well in the Novice Division. The team of Will R, Maisie M, Alfie H and Shreya B finished 10th out of 23 teams.
All students played admirably and experienced moments of personal success during the event. Their ability to remain composed under pressure and learn from each move was a testament to their growing skill and resilience.
Congratulations to all players for their enthusiastic participation and commitment. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented Grammar with integrity and grace. Thank you as well to Mrs Gahan for attending the event.

FROM THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT
Basketball
Sunshine Coast Grammar Basketball program entered two teams into the Champion Basketball School of Queensland Wild Card competition in the Junior Secondary (Years 9-10) competition on 20 - 21 May. This competition is the premier school basketball competition of the state and is hugely competitive. Grammar Basketball played multiple games in Brisbane across the two games, with the highest-seeded teams moving on to the next level of competition.
The boys’ team, predominantly made up of Year 9 students, displayed strong basketball skills throughout their games. Unfortunately, this team was not successful in making the next level. The team was incredibly resilient and showed true grit and high-level skills against strong opposition. They are to be commended.
The girls’ team has achieved sensational results in this tournament. Their play and composure were exceptional, winning 3 out of their 4 games by an average of 41 points. This team will now move on to the next state-level competition, and we wish them all the best.
Well done to all involved.

Rugby League
U17-18 Years State Championship
Well done to Jess C, who recently represented the region at the Championships.
The Sunshine Coast team progressed through to the semi-final but unfortunately lost against the eventual winners of the championship. Jess scored the only try from the Sunshine Coast in that game. The team secured third place overall in the state. Jess was instrumental to the team’s success, and we congratulate her! Grammar Rugby are fortunate to have Jess leading from the front in our Girls First X.
Sailing
Last weekend, the 2025 Stratogen Inter-Schools Regatta took place in Noosa. The heat was high, and the wind was low (and the energy was mainly spent playing with other school kids or in the sand). Congratulations to all students for participating and showcasing your teamwork and persistence.
- Noah C and Olivia B placed 2nd in the Secondary Division following a second day with multiple victories.
- Georgie U, Daniel G, and Jack R all displayed incredible patience as the wind died on the first day, placing 5th overall in the Primary Division Pool B.
- Philip and Sebastian V-D performed amazingly well for their first time dinghy sailing, finishing 4th in Primary Pool A.
Triathlon
Grace B produced another stellar performance representing Australia at the 2025 World Triathlon Para Series in Yokohama. Grace took Bronze in the PTS5 event, just behind the world number 2 and 3 ranked athletes. Grace left the water in first place and shared the fastest run leg in a strong field of athletes. Simply amazing Grace, well done!

Volleyball
Volleyball season is in full swing for Term 2, with four teams battling it out in the SCISSA competition.
Our Junior A Grade Girls, coached by year 11 student, Bethany W, most of whom are new to the sport, are showing great improvement, with their hard work at weekly training sessions paying off with one win in their first 4 outings! Sophie U and Heidi P have been demonstrating great skills.
Our Intermediate A Div Girls, coached by Ms Amanda Rowe, are the champions of close matches. They are off to a solid start with two wins led by Sophie E. The B Div Intermediate Girls teams, coached by Mr. Dutton, are competing well and are having great fun in the process. Finally, our Junior Boys team, a mix of Year 7-8 students, are honing their communication skills on the court and have made a great start, currently sitting in third place on the table, guided by Coach Mr. Cross.
Official training runs Monday afternoons from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. It’s great to see so many students attending this term.
A huge thank you goes out to all our dedicated players, coaches and parents, as well as our amazing volunteers such as Bethany W, Sophie E, Tulsa H, Ollie C and Olana R who have assisted in refereeing, coaching and scoring this semester.

Students explored how balanced nutrition fuels the body and mind, improving concentration in the classroom, boosting energy levels for training, and aiding recovery after physical activity. They also learned how to make smarter food choices and understand the role of key nutrients in their development.
The session aimed to build lifelong habits that will support students not only during their time at the academy but well into the future.

FROM THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
The Library Project - Vanuatu
Last year, we began building links with the Library Project, a Brisbane-based charity creating libraries for schools in Vanuatu. Recently, a small team of Senior students accompanied me to Brisbane to deliver our sorted book donations from Book Week last year, deliver our Bastille Day fundraising donation, and spend the day sorting books for their next library building mission. It was a big day, and after 5 hours of sorting books, we certainly had an idea of the bigger picture and how we can help moving forward. The Senior students did an incredible job, and there were many shared moments talking about books we loved and ones that were recommended, just demonstrating the power of reading and connection. We are looking forward to fundraising again this year during our Bastille Day and Book Week celebrations. Grammar servant leadership at its best – Félicitations les filled!
Donations for the Library Project are accepted at any time. If you have children’s books to donate that are in good condition, please just drop them into the Languages Office. Merci mille fois!

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
A note from Ms Bradbury
Grammar Bel Fine Choir Shines at Sunshine Coast Purely Vocal Concert
Last Friday night, the Grammar Bel Fine Choir had the honour of performing at the Sunshine Coast Purely Vocal concert, a vibrant celebration of music, community and the joy of choral artistry.
Hosted by the talented Hot Ginger Chorus and held at the Coolum Civic Centre, the event brought together seven exceptional vocal groups from across the region.
Our Grammar Bel Fine Choir captivated the audience with a heartfelt and polished performance of three diverse and moving pieces: Blackbird, How Great His Love, and Apple Tree. Each song showcased the choir’s musical versatility, emotional depth, and strong sense of ensemble, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
The evening was a true celebration of community spirit and vocal excellence, and it was a wonderful opportunity for our students to share the stage with other accomplished choirs and to be part of the wider choral community on the Sunshine Coast.
Congratulations to all the performers and a special thank you to Mrs Bowman for planning and hosting the event, as well as conducting the Bel Fine Choir, Mr Feletto for accompanying on piano and the organisers for making such an inspiring night possible!
A few weeks ago, at the start of May, some of my fellow musicians and I had the honour of being selected to partake in the State honours ensemble program, better known as SHEP. Overall, we had 11 Grammar students attend this workshop hosted by Griffith University. We had the honour of meeting with students and conductors from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast and even Gin Gin.
Today I would like to tell you about my experience in the strings ensemble conducted by the incredible Loreta Fin, who is a string player, conductor and composer. Within one weekend, we did 16 hours jam-packed with music to create a performance for our parents on Sunday. On Friday, the strings looked at 11 amazing pieces. On Saturday, we chose our top six and prepared them for the performance on Sunday, which was such an incredible experience.
Overall, SHEP was a remarkable experience where my friends and I met some incredible musicians, played some incredible music and learnt so much.
Thank you!
