SPORT NEWS

FROM THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT

Basketball

Sunshine Coast Grammar Basketball program entered two teams into the Champion Basketball School of Queensland Wild Card competition in the Junior Secondary (Years 9-10) competition on 20 - 21 May. This competition is the premier school basketball competition of the state and is hugely competitive. Grammar Basketball played multiple games in Brisbane across the two games, with the highest-seeded teams moving on to the next level of competition.

The boys’ team, predominantly made up of Year 9 students, displayed strong basketball skills throughout their games. Unfortunately, this team was not successful in making the next level. The team was incredibly resilient and showed true grit and high-level skills against strong opposition. They are to be commended.

The girls’ team has achieved sensational results in this tournament. Their play and composure were exceptional, winning 3 out of their 4 games by an average of 41 points. This team will now move on to the next state-level competition, and we wish them all the best.

Well done to all involved.

Independent District Carnival

Our Primary and Secondary teams are set to compete at the district carnival next Tuesday, 27 May, and we wish them all the best. We look forward to celebrating their accomplishments next week.

Grammar Run Club

Olympian Juan Van Deventer leads the Grammar Run Club on Monday mornings on the training oval at the top of the school from 7.00 - 7.45am.

It was so great to see so many new students and parents at the Grammar Run Club. These sessions are open to all staff, students P-12 and their parents. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with members of the Grammar community, get fit and have fun in a supportive environment. All abilities are welcome!

In addition, Level 3 Sprint Coach and parent Lee Batchler is delivering speed sessions for interested students. There is a focus on field and court athletes. This will run alongside the regular fitness session, so runners have a choice!

Pool Lifesaving

On Sunday, 18 May, the Sunshine Coast Grammar Pool Lifesaving Club competed at the first of the winter season Surf Lifesaving Pool Rescue Carnivals. We had a team of six competitors at the Gold Coast. The Grammar team was placed fifth overall.

Rugby League

U17-18 Years State Championship

Well done to Jess C, who recently represented the region at the Championships.

The Sunshine Coast team progressed through to the semi-final but unfortunately lost against the eventual winners of the championship.  Jess scored the only try from the Sunshine Coast in that game. The team secured third place overall in the state. Jess was instrumental to the team’s success, and we congratulate her! Grammar Rugby are fortunate to have Jess leading from the front in our Girls First X.

Sailing

Last weekend, the 2025 Stratogen Inter-Schools Regatta took place in Noosa. The heat was high, and the wind was low (and the energy was mainly spent playing with other school kids or in the sand). Congratulations to all students for participating and showcasing your teamwork and persistence.

  • Noah C and Olivia B placed 2nd in the Secondary Division following a second day with multiple victories.
  • Georgie U, Daniel G, and Jack R all displayed incredible patience as the wind died on the first day, placing 5th overall in the Primary Division Pool B.
  • Philip and Sebastian V-D performed amazingly well for their first time dinghy sailing, finishing 4th in Primary Pool A.

Triathlon

Grace B produced another stellar performance representing Australia at the 2025 World Triathlon Para Series in Yokohama. Grace took Bronze in the PTS5 event, just behind the world number 2 and 3 ranked athletes. Grace left the water in first place and shared the fastest run leg in a strong field of athletes. Simply amazing Grace, well done!

Volleyball

Volleyball season is in full swing for Term 2, with four teams battling it out in the SCISSA competition.

Our Junior A Grade Girls, coached by year 11 student, Bethany W, most of whom are new to the sport, are showing great improvement, with their hard work at weekly training sessions paying off with one win in their first 4 outings! Sophie U and Heidi P have been demonstrating great skills.

Our Intermediate A Div Girls, coached by Ms Amanda Rowe, are the champions of close matches. They are off to a solid start with two wins led by Sophie E. The B Div Intermediate Girls teams, coached by Mr. Dutton, are competing well and are having great fun in the process. Finally, our Junior Boys team, a mix of Year 7-8 students, are honing their communication skills on the court and have made a great start, currently sitting in third place on the table, guided by Coach Mr. Cross.

Official training runs Monday afternoons from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. It’s great to see so many students attending this term.

A huge thank you goes out to all our dedicated players, coaches and parents, as well as our amazing volunteers such as Bethany W, Sophie E, Tulsa H, Ollie C and Olana R who have assisted in refereeing, coaching and scoring this semester.

Academy

Last week, we welcomed back Gabi Simpson (Australian Diamonds #164, Queensland Firebirds #76, Central Pulse #81) virtually to guide our Academy netballers through a ‘controlling the controllables’ workshop. Our netballers are fortunate to learn from the best as they develop skills necessary to excel both on and off the court.

Thank you to Sports Dietitian, Ali Miles, for taking the time this week to educate our Academy netballers on the importance of performance nutrition in preparing for competition. Athletes learned practical tips to enhance their training, recovery, and overall competition readiness.

RUGBY

    Academy nutritionist smoothie workshop

As part of our commitment to supporting the overall development of our Academy students, we recently held a focused nutrition session tailored to their needs. The session highlighted the importance of healthy eating for both academic success and athletic performance.

Students explored how balanced nutrition fuels the body and mind, improving concentration in the classroom, boosting energy levels for training, and aiding recovery after physical activity. They also learned how to make smarter food choices and understand the role of key nutrients in their development.

The session aimed to build lifelong habits that will support students not only during their time at the academy but well into the future.
