Welcome to a new year and a special welcome to Grammar for our new families, staff and students. Thank you for your attendance at one of the many orientation activities over the last two weeks. Welcoming the students and staff back on campus this week has been a particular highlight. We have been eagerly awaiting the recommencement of the buzz of school life, and the energy of the school term, and these last few days have been wonderful. A school is not primarily made up of its buildings and its books - but rather its people. And it is widely acknowledged that there is no better community than Sunshine Coast Grammar School.
Regardless of the year level, all children feel a sense of excitement and nerves on their return to school. Often those two emotions feel the same for children! They will also be very excited to see their friends and for new beginnings. I recently wrote an article Back to School in the Age of AI and in my article, I reminded families of a few messages:
Like many of you, I have spent the last few years zipping through virtual shopping aisles, randomly and enthusiastically selecting AI tools and applying them with unfettered abandon. While it has been a delightful and exploratory journey, I must confess that not every moment was productive.
On the other hand, as a parent and a Principal, I have always been mindful of the impact of technology (including social media and AI) on today’s children. As a lifelong learner and passionate teacher, I have discussed how we navigate the integration of AI and its potential to transform the way we learn and teach.
The negative effects of technology, social media and screen time on children’s physical wellbeing, mental health and eyesight are well-documented. In response, many States and schooling sectors are creating policies that limit access to smartphones during school hours. If you want to know the answer to “What’s hot in 2025?” the answer might surprise you:– the Nokia 3210! Unkindly referred to as a dumbphone, the Nokia 3210 has several great features that support communication but limit social media access. This humble retro-phone has come out of retirement and its strong resurgence has made me consider investing in the company (there’s an AI tool for that too).
As children return to school and spend more time in classrooms and on screens, their overall well-being must be a priority. Let’s preserve that summertime feeling by encouraging outdoor activities, regular physical exercise, and face-to-face social interactions. Setting clear boundaries for screen time outside school hours is equally important. Not all homework needs to be completed in front of a laptop. Together, parents and schools can build balanced routines that include time for learning, leisure, reading, family connection, and unstructured fun.
Your children will not be greeted by a robot when returning to the classroom.
AI has boundless potential in education, offering benefits like personalised learning, adapting to students' individual needs, and providing additional support and automated administrative tasks. However, while AI enhances classroom practice, it doesn’t replace the essence of education: the human connection. Teachers set the tone, cultivate a sense of belonging and insist on civility, ethics and values. Through these efforts, they deliver the ‘secret sauce’ of education and the power of learning through conversation.
Learning is, at its core, a social endeavour. The richest and most transformative learning experiences occur through real-world interaction and meaningful human connections.
I wish you and your child/ren a wonderful and exciting learning journey at Grammar in 2025!

Independent Schools Australia (ISA), in partnership with state and territory Associations of Independent Schools, will soon officially launch School Choice Counts - a national campaign.
This is the first in a series of regular campaign bulletins designed to keep you informed about our School Choice Counts Federal Election campaign and provide practical resources for you, your teachers, parents, and school communities to get involved.
Our goal is simple: to protect Independent school students’ government funding, defend family choice in education, and ensure fair treatment for every family who chooses an Independent school.
These bulletins will include updates on the campaign, important facts and figures about Independent schools, and details on how you can help spread the message.

Welcome back to all in our school community and a special welcome to our new families. I have been the Grammar Chaplain since 2008 and believe we have a fantastic school community.
My role as Chaplain involves (amongst other things) the teaching of Christian Education to a variety of classes from Year 6 - 12, Chapel services for all Year groups P-12 and for families, and a pastoral role across the school community.
The Chapel is open from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm each day and you are very welcome to visit for some quiet reflection or a chat.
You can read more about the Christian mission of our school on our website. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to know more or if I can support your family in any way.
Grammar’s focus Bible Verse for the year is Romans 15:13A, ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace.’ May these words encourage your family as we journey together through the year ahead.
I wish you and your children God’s richest blessings for 2025.

FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
Welcome back to Sunshine Coast Grammar for 2025 and a special welcome to our new Grammar families. It was wonderful to see so many happy and focused students. Classes have been very settled, with students working alongside their teachers to set up for a successful year. A real highlight at the beginning of the year was the opening of the new primary building. Students and Teachers have settled in well.
We also have several new teachers and leadership team members who will be introduced in the next Lion’s Roar.
Our finishing times have changed for 2025. It is important to note that there are two different finishing times for the Primary School.
- Prep students finish at 2:45 pm
- Year 1 to 6 students finish at 3:05 pm
If you are picking your child/children up from school, please plan to arrive at your eldest child’s finishing time. This will assist with traffic and parking, and enable families with younger students only, to collect students and exit the school.
Thank you to parents for your support as we transition into the new building. If your child’s class is located in the new building and you are waiting downstairs to meet them at the end of the day, it would be greatly appreciated if you could wait outside the building where your child can meet you.
It has also been wonderful to see the construction of the new junior Primary play equipment in the forest area. We are looking forward to this equipment being available for students to play on in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience at this early stage of the school year which, like all schools, is traditionally a busy time. I look forward to seeing you around the campus.
Setting Up for Success
In the Primary School, students have begun the year engaging with our Setting Up for Success program. In this program teachers work with students to make our Learning Assets explicit, ensuring students have a clear understanding of the skills that will assist them at their age and stage of learning. Our Learning Assets, which consist of Collaboration, Communication, Thinking, Researching and Self-Management, are reported on as part of the reporting process in Terms 2 and 4.
Leave During Term Time
Please be advised that it is our preference that students don’t take leave during term time. There is no expectation that teachers will provide work for students if families choose to take leave during term time. If assessment is taking place during the time students are on leave, students will forego this opportunity.
Parents wishing to remove their children from school for family vacations or other extended leave must seek permission from the Head of Primary School in writing at HeadofPrimary@scgs.qld.edu.au
Parents can notify one-off instances of leave or leave for sporting events through the usual channels, i.e. Absentee Email - absentees@scgs.qld.edu.au, as well as the Class Teacher.
Rainforest Caféteria and Flexischools Reminder
A reminder to parents to please update your child/children’s class/es on Flexischools as soon as possible to avoid any issues with Rainforest Caféteria orders. The new Menu is now available on GECO.

FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY
The new school year has commenced, and it feels like the holidays are a distant memory. This year we welcome over 80 new families into secondary school, our new students have come from both local, interstate and overseas. During the first week all our new students have been welcomed and with the help of their buddies eased into life at Grammar. I have heard of some wonderful connections being made between our new students and their buddies.
We commence 2025 with several new teachers in the secondary school, Mrs Talina Rose (Humanities), Mr Graham Kanowski and Mr Andrew Skipper (Mathematics), Mr Rohan Young and Mr Callum Brown (Science), Mr James Witcombe (Head of Year), Mr Dan Neven (English) and Mr Peter Evans (Art), Ms Vicki Farley (HPE).
Our 2024 seniors performed exceptionally well last year. Their results saw Grammar produce a median ATAR higher than any other school on the Sunshine Coast and placed us amongst the top schools in Queensland. These results were a direct reflection of the educational environment we have created. When students are supported by dedicated and passionate staff they have every opportunity to excel.
Thank you to all parents for your patience in navigating school traffic during the return to school. For Secondary families, the Parsons Road entrance loop is the most efficient. Parents will also find that we have created an extra drop-off zone adjacent to the swimming pool on your left-hand side as you come through the Parsons Road entrance.
Wishing everyone a warm welcome.
Mr Darren MacLeod-Paterson
Head of Secondary
FROM THE PATHWAYS DEPARTMENT
Grammar’s Pathways Team provides career information, career education and career counselling services to the School community. Our main portal for access to careers information and Pathways programs is the Careers and Pathways page on GECO. All Secondary Students and Parents have access to this Group page here, where you will find links to a myriad of resources to help you explore your future possibilities.
Throughout the year, we receive information on a range of opportunities for students to participate in career-related events and activities. We also run our own in-school events and programs, often involving university and/or employer representatives coming to speak with our students. We have two news feeds: the Pathways Hub newsfeed, which provides information about events and opportunities that are available to all students in all schools, including things like scholarships and university Open Days. The newsfeed on the Careers and Pathways page provides information about local events and opportunities on the Sunshine Coast or those just for the Grammar community. Please make it a habit to check both of these newsfeeds regularly, as new items come up every week.
Students and Parents can book an appointment any time to speak with a member of the Pathways Team about their future plans, and their decision-making about subjects and courses. Just click on the “Book Online” button on the Careers and Pathways page to access our booking system.
We look forward to working with you this year, to help you find your pathway to a future filled with passion and purpose!

Exchange and Study Reflections – French and Japanese
During Term 4, two of our Year 10 French students were fortunate to travel to France and immerse themselves with host families and school life in Aurillac. Perhaps the most enriching part of the program was that both students had already hosted their French “correspondantes” so it was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen these friendships and share a deeper understanding of the cultural differences.
Three Year 11 Japanese students also enjoyed a six-week exchange over the summer holidays at our Sister School in Japan. This immersive experience highlighted the incredible benefits of continuing language studies into senior years, offering unique cultural insights, enhanced language proficiency, and valuable international connections. Learning a language opens doors to unforgettable opportunities! We look forward to sharing more from these exchange students once they have settled back into our school.

Teacher Spotlight
Di Pietra Sensei utilised her summer holidays to attend language classes in Japan, thanks to a scholarship from the Tokyo Government aimed at supporting the ongoing language education of Japanese teachers in Queensland. She participated in a three-week immersive language program in Fukuoka, Kyushu. This experience not only enhanced her language skills but also improved her teaching practices and expanded her professional network in Japan. A significant takeaway was the profound reminder of what it feels like to be a student again.
