Learning with Grace and Charity
Thank you to everyone for coming together last week for our annual Sorry Day Assembly, a gathering that acknowledges and reinforces our commitment to reconciliation as educators, leaders, professional and support staff, parents, students, and community members.
A community approach is integral in advocating for equity, social justice, and wellbeing for all people, as well as highlighting the exceptional quality of commitment and care within our community.
We learned that we will always say sorry, and we will always be sorry. I was so struck by this simple and powerful message delivered by Mrs Barber, Reconciliation Action Plan Coordinator, during her address at the Assembly. Three little words. I am sorry. She reminded us that not so long ago, we had also said three simple, yet powerful words, ‘lest we forget’.
Our Sorry Day Assembly is an annual gathering in our calendar where we collect our thoughts and strengthen our resolve and our commitment. It is retaining its power and momentum as the children in the Assembly are showing commitment to reconciliation, in much the same way as we see so many young people involved in ANZAC marches across the country. Thank you, Mrs Barber, for a wonderful address.
Sheila Heen, a lecturer at Harvard Law School and co-founder of Triad Consulting Group, co-author of the books Difficult Conversations and Thanks for the Feedback, reminds us that many people avoid emotive topics and conversations out of fear.
She shows us that coming to a topic or conversation that is emotional or difficult is often only hard because of a belief that the purpose of the conversation is to convince somebody that they’re wrong or to convince somebody that you are right. Conversations where there needs to be only one right person, and every other person is wrong more often than not, do not tend to go well.
So why must we address the wrongs of the past? On balance, there are two things - number one, to remember that worrying about the potential costs of raising something important is only half the ledger. The other half of the ledger is what the potential costs of avoiding it and letting it fester. Forgiveness, acceptance and gratitude are the secret elements more powerful than divisiveness resulting from the win and loss scenario. Stories are always a central feature of assemblies and sharing stories with an audience who yearns to hear them is so powerful, builds empathy and invites us to share the experience that leads to the need to say sorry.
The assembly was a wonderful reminder of who we are, what we value, and demonstrated the goodness of this special place.
Where has the term gone? It’s the end of Week 7, and we are collectively sprinting towards the June-July break. Hold on tight, stay warm, look after one another and thank you.

At our recent Sorry Day Assembly, our Chapel Captains shared these poignant words:
"Today we are thinking about the past, present and future as we build relational bridges from now to next. In Ephesians 4:32 we read, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Let’s think about our values of kindness and compassion with regards to Sorry Day and reconciliation. There is, unfortunately, so much that has been done in the past that has caused harm. But today we can act with compassion and fairness in our daily choices.
What does it look like to display faith in action and build bridges in all of our own relationships? The Bible says that we should say sorry, forgive others and reconcile with them. The question for now and the future is, can we do it and how do we do it?
Jesus not only taught this but chose to live it out. He is the ultimate model of faith in action. God can restore us into a right relationship with Jesus, who also opens the door for us to live in right relationships with each other. We need God’s help to forgive both others and ourselves, to promote forgiveness and be willing to say sorry - as a nation, community, in our families and as individuals. We hope for a better today and a better tomorrow together.
Let us pray together: Dear Lord Jesus, you have modelled for us forgiveness and reconciliation and we acknowledge our need of you in this area. May we build new connections and restore relationships where there has been hurt. Thank you for dying and rising again so that our wrongs can be forgiven. We place before you the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced. We acknowledge the pain of the past, as well as the hurt and frustration of many of our sisters and brothers in the present. But with hope, we look towards more positive things to come. May we never be complacent about the need to work for justice. Give us the courage to work together towards change and improvement. And may we be people for whom it is natural to say sorry, to ask for forgiveness, to grant others our forgiveness and above all to accept your forgiveness. Amen.’

Growing Healthy Coping Strategies
It’s been a wonderful first month for me at Grammar! Starting something new has reminded me how even positive change comes with challenges. Transitions, uncertainty, stress and emotional ups and downs are all part of life. For our students, learning how to adapt and cope is a vital life skill - one that develops with support, modelling, explicit teaching and lots of practice.
Healthy coping strategies are tools we collect for our toolkit over time. For younger children, their ability to organise, self-regulate, and make sense of big feelings is still developing - sometimes they need to borrow our tools while they create their own.
All emotions are valid and temporary. When children learn there are many ways to respond to what they feel, they build resilience and confidence. Creating a “toolkit” of strategies helps them feel more equipped to handle life’s tricky moments.
Here are some simple ideas for helping your child grow their toolkit.
Raising Healthy Minds
The Raising Healthy Minds app is a free, personalised, pocket resource to help parents and carers raise confident, resilient children. Co-designed with parents and experts and funded by the Australian Government, Raising Healthy Minds aims to support children’s social and emotional wellbeing with evidence-based information.
You’ll find information on topics like dealing with worries and making friends, as well as ideas for day-to-day life, like creating family routines, looking after yourself as a parent, and building strong relationships.
The app offers a mix of quick-read articles, videos and animations aimed at parents and carers of children aged 0-12 years. You can tailor information to the age of your child and opt in to receive helpful tips.
Raising Healthy Minds provides simple-to-use information at your fingertips with clear actions you can start today.
Download from Google Play or the App Store or go to raisingchildren.net.au/rhm to learn more and raise a healthy mind.

Special Events
Grandparents’ Day is a much-loved tradition at Sunshine Coast Grammar School and it is with great pleasure that we invite our school community, next Wednesday, 11 June, to Grandparents’ Day 2025. The day will commence with a Chapel Service at 7:45 am, followed by an assembly in Grammar Hall at 8:45 am.
Our Prep to Year 6 classrooms are then open for Grandparents to visit for a glimpse into learning in a 2025 classroom. Grandparents are encouraged to visit younger students’ rooms first before visiting the older siblings’ classroom. Grandparents are also welcome to stay for a morning tea with the students.
Students are asked to please bring a small plate of morning tea to share. As a reminder, we ask that families please avoid bringing food containing nut products.
Week 9, the last week of Term 2, is also a time to acknowledge and celebrate the Foundation Day for Sunshine Coast Grammar School on Friday, 20 June. Once again, we will gather in Grammar Hall to acknowledge students and teachers, whilst the Annual Grammar Gift will be held on the oval following the Foundation Day Assembly.
We look forward to sharing these special mornings with those who can attend.
Congratulations
It is always wonderful to see the vast range of achievements of students each year. Congratulations to all students who have been successful in a range of recent events, including the da Vinci Decathlon, District Cross Country, Regional Cross Country, Sunshine Coast Individual Age Chess Championship and Queensland Schools Pool Lifesaving Championships.
Learning Experiences
Our Year 4 students joined in some hands-on learning experiences for their living history incursion recently, which explored what it would have been like living in Australia at the time of the arrival of the First Fleet.
Next Monday, 6NO and 6CS students will participate in guided tours of the State Parliament buildings as part of their Civics and Citizenship unit on Government. 6MK and 6SF will attend this excursion on Monday of Week 9.
Academic Reports - A message from Kathryn Wilkinson, Dean of Teaching and Learning
At the end of this term, families will receive their child’s Semester One Report via Parent Lounge. This report outlines each student’s progress in relation to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, which includes updated content and revised achievement expectations.
Student achievement is reported using five levels: Emerging, Developing, Demonstrating, Advancing and Extending. Most students will be working at the Demonstrating level, which reflects the expected achievement for their year level. Developing indicates that additional support is required, while Advancing and Extending reflect learning beyond the standard.
These levels provide a clear and consistent way to understand each child’s progress. In addition to the written report, families will also have the opportunity to meet with teachers again in Term 3.
If you have any questions about your child’s report, please contact their Classroom Teacher in the first instance. For further discussion, you are also welcome to contact the Dean of Primary (Prep–Year 2 or Years 3–6).

FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY
Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the Large Ensemble Showcase held by our music department. The obvious joy our students display whilst performing is a testament to the staff who spend countless hours developing their talents. I do want to congratulate our Music Department for all the incredible work they do with our students.
Our tennis students also competed in the Queensland Secondary Schools Tennis Teams Regional Competition last week. I am pleased to advise that our Senior Boys and Girls teams, along with our Junior Girls, have now qualified for the State competition.
The end of the term is fast approaching, next week is yet another short week with the Nambour Show holiday on the Friday. Parents are reminded that the school will not be open on Friday, June 13. On Monday, 9 June, the Secondary Athletics Carnival will be held at the University track. Students will be transported from school to the track from 8:30 am and will return to school by 3:00 pm. Students will be permitted to wear the House uniform to school. Students driving to the University track is discouraged as parking is very limited.
Due to the shortened term, our planned reporting deadlines for staff have needed to be adjusted, and accordingly, reports will be made available to families in the first week of the holiday break. I do apologise for this change. Unfortunately, the number of public holidays and a short nine-week term have had an impact on teaching programs.

Winter Cricket training commencing from Thursday, 12 June. Join the Grammar team via the PlayHQ App.
On Saturday, seven Grammar teams competed in the opening Regional Round of the UN Youth EVATT Competition against ten other teams from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Hervey Bay.
Debating the questions of Transnational Drug Trafficking and Overfishing, teams represented their allocated country in a mock UN Security Council Meeting. After much discussion, debate and negotiation, resolutions were passed (or in some cases, vetoed).
While results will not be released until all Qld Regional Rounds are complete, our teams are all to be highly commended. Most of our teams were comprised of students in Year 9, with only one Year 10 student and two Year 11 students. All but two competed in this high-level competition for the first time, predominantly against students in Year 12.
All teams are to be congratulated for their determination, listening and speaking skills, knowledge of current world issues, and complex UN Security Council procedures.
In true UN spirit, new partnerships were established to develop a plan to connect with teams from other schools in the region on a more regular basis to promote further opportunities for our students.
Well done to all students.

FROM THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
Education Perfect: International Languages Championships
The annual EP World Language Championships were held from 6 - 13 May. The results are now in, and there is a lot to be proud of! Over this week-long online competition, Grammar students answered an astounding 312,633 questions, earning 118,123 points! This collaborative effort saw us rank 35th in the world, 26th in Australia and 6th in QLD. In a language breakdown, we finished 7th for French and 4th for Japanese in QLD. Award levels are based on points earned, and there were 40 individual awards earned. We were proud to acknowledge our top-performing students on our Secondary Assembly today.

Secondary Japan Club
Throughout Term 2, the Japan Club continued to be a welcoming space where students connected over Wednesday lunch and enjoyed the richness of Japanese culture. This term’s activities were lucky and colourful as they were fun – from studying fortune predictions (omikuji), tasty lolly treats revealed through the 1,000 string game (senbonbiki), to high-energy mikoshi races and vibrant spring-themed art. The term wrapped up sweetly with sanshoku dango – soft, pastel-coloured rice cake treats. We are looking forward to even more Japan Club fun in Term 3!

Bastille Day Competition – French-Themed Food Art!
In Week 1 next term, we will be celebrating Bastille Day, and to get our celebration underway, we are running a French-themed food art competition for all students from Prep to Year 12.
This year’s Bastille Day theme is all about FOOD - one of the most important parts of French culture. For this year’s competition, students are invited to create a poster (no larger than A4) incorporating a real item of French food into their design (e.g. camembert, croissant, macaron, crêpe, baguette)! Fabulous prizes will be presented on Bastille Day assembly Week 1/Term 3.
Submissions can be made via this link or hand a printed copy into the Languages Office by the last day of Term 2.
We can't wait to see some amazing designs, but don't forget to make sure they are hand-drawn; computer-generated designs will not be judged!
FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
A note from Ms Bradbury
On Saturday evening, the Coolum Civic Centre came alive with the smooth sounds of jazz as our talented Stage Band opened the Jazz after Sunset event. Performing with energy and flair, the band set the tone for a fantastic night of music, warming up the stage for the incredible Robyn Brown & The Indigo Collective.
A special highlight of the evening was our performance of Cantaloupe Island, featuring a stunning solo by local Buderim tenor saxophonist Phil Hayter. His artistry added a rich, soulful layer to the piece that had the audience captivated.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Larkin for his expert conducting and guidance throughout the evening. It was a joy to be part of such a vibrant musical showcase.

Live @ The Hangar
This term, 52 talented students took to the stage for our latest round of Live @ The Hangar concerts.
Each performer showcased their dedication and musical growth through solo performances on their chosen instruments, and the audiences responded with heartfelt appreciation.
We are incredibly proud of every student, not only for their musical achievements but also for the courage it takes to step into the spotlight. Their hard work and commitment to excellence were evident in every note. Well done!
Thank you to the parents for their support, and to our dedicated studio teachers for guiding and preparing students so thoroughly in their instrumental lessons.

Performance is a vital part of learning an instrument.
It gives students a clear goal to work toward each term and builds confidence, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment.

This year’s Reconciliation Week theme, Bridging Now to Next, is all about learning from the past and moving forward together. Every room in the centre found its own way to explore this message.
It’s been a big week in Kindy 1! Our little legends have been busy creating not one, but two awesome displays — a bright and buzzy Bee Art wall for World Bee Day, and a thoughtful Reconciliation Week display. The timing was perfect, giving us loads of chances to explore, learn, and get creative.
We got hands-on with different art materials to make more bees, watched short videos about Indigenous animals and bush foods, read some beautiful storybooks, tried our hand at dot painting, and even built a bug and insect play table. These activities helped us learn more about nature and the rich culture of Australia’s First Nations people.
Our yarning circle continues to be a special part of our day. It’s where we raise our flags, check in on our native beehive, and care for our bush garden — all while deepening our connection to the land and each other.
On a recent walk to the library and chapel, our Kindy 2 friends spotted a caterpillar on the fence — perfect timing, since we’ve been learning all about the butterfly life cycle!
Over in Toddler 2, one of our friends shared photos from a family trip to Fraser Island and told us all about catching a fish. The next day, we made our own fishing game using sticks, string, and hoops. We “fished” in a water tray filled with sea animals and had a blast naming everything we caught — a fun way to build language and animal recognition skills.
In Nursery 2, the kids used sticks and paint to make dot art in the shape of Australia. They added colours from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags to show their support — a beautiful “show of hands” for culture and country.
Junior 2 got crafty with scissors, cutting out pictures from magazines to build their fine motor skills and express themselves creatively.
Over in Kindy 3, the sandpit turned into a beehive! One child set up shovels and a yellow bucket and declared it was “a hive for the bees!” Everyone joined in, making honey and working together to balance their sandy creations.
Toddler One explored shapes and patterns using colourful paper, building their concentration and problem-solving skills through play.
And in Junior One, the kids teamed up with Nursery 2 for a lovely morning in the yarning circle. They watered the plants with rainwater and enjoyed the fresh smells, especially the mint! Just as we wrapped up our Bee Day fun, we spotted bees buzzing around the hive.
Across every room, our children are connecting with nature, culture, each other, and the world around them. What a week of wonder, learning and laughter!
