Thank you to everyone in our school community for your role in supporting not only each other but also the wider Sunshine Coast and SEQ communities over the past week. While the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred was unavoidable, we appreciate the calm and resilience shown, even as many events and gatherings were cancelled.
Our annual International Women's Day Breakfast was cancelled and we want to thank Anna Jackson, CEO of Unitywater, for agreeing to be our speaker, and we hope we can re-engage with her in another context in the future. Her story is amazing and inspiring.
In summary, the theme this year was planned to showcase three main points. Firstly, to acknowledge and show gratitude for the many men, young men and boys who lift up their mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters. We are so grateful.
Secondly, an acknowledgement of those women, young women and girls who live in poverty, or live in some areas of poor or developing nations, in extremist or religious contexts or in war zones. We gather to remind ourselves that we have work to do on your behalf and we commit to never forgetting you.
Lastly, we gather to recognise where women have come from as citizens in Australia, where we are currently, and where we hope to be in the future. It is not so much about gender, but more importantly, it is about gratitude and understanding that there is enough success to go around and we can all reach our potential and make our individual contributions without prejudice. International Women's Day is not about sexism, it is a day where difference is both valued and celebrated.
In closing, a very special thank you to Zoe Kratzmann. She is a superstar businesswoman, an inspiring creative designer and a generous supporter of this cause. Her donation helped raise over $2,000, which will be directed to her chosen charity, The Forgotten Women—an organisation dedicated to supporting vulnerable women. Congratulations also to Therese Playford, the lucky winner of our raffle!
Though the weather may have disrupted this year’s celebrations, the spirit of International Women’s Day remains strong. As we look ahead to 2025, let us all pause and reflect. A thriving community is one where all women are empowered with equal opportunities to learn, grow and lead.

ANZAC Day 2025
Each year, Sunshine Coast Grammar School commemorates ANZAC Day with a special ANZAC whole school assembly and participating in community events.
This year, parents are invited to attend the special whole school assembly on Thursday 24 April 2025. This assembly follows a traditional ANZAC service format and families have the opportunity to participate by laying a wreath or floral arrangement.
The Bel Canto Choir will also be performing at the Dawn Service in Mooloolaba and Grammar will again be participating in the Buderim community ANZAC Day march on Friday 25 April 2025. Students from Prep to Year 12 are invited to march with their teachers, wearing full formal uniforms including formal hats and blazers for secondary students. The assembly point for the march is the Buderim Woolworths car park at 8:00 am for an 8:30 am start. The march proceeds down the main street of Buderim and concludes at the Buderim State School oval. Our music students will also be providing music for the march, located at the Buderim Pizza Company.
Parents can collect children from the oval. After the march, families may, if they wish, choose to join the community ANZAC service that follows the march. This is located in the forest in the Buderim State School grounds at the conclusion of the march.
Grammar has a proud tradition of forming the largest cohort of students marching from any local school and we look forward to again joining with our students to mark this significant occasion.

Out of a cultural background that minimized the dignity of women, Jesus boldly affirmed their worth and gladly benefited from their vital ministry. Jesus not only cared for and blessed women, he allowed women to bless him. Many women were among Jesus’s band of disciples. Perhaps most significantly, women were the first witnesses to the resurrection. Underlying Jesus’ ministry was the radical assumption from that era that women have enormous value and purpose. May we continue to work together to live out the values of Jesus, such as compassion, honour and love, and in doing so, to ensure equity and dignity for all.
One of Grammar's wonderful traditions is when Prep students receive the 'Jesus Storybook Bible' from our prefects at their first Chapel Service. It will be wonderful to see a full Chapel with families supporting their children. May this Bible be a blessing and encouragement to our 2025 Prep families.
Tickets are limited and close on Monday 17 March. Purchase your ticket today via Events Online.

Is your child getting enough free play for optimal development?
Research shows that today’s children have significantly less free time compared to previous generations due to factors like academic commitments, structured extracurricular activities, and increased screen time. Understanding how much time is left for unstructured play can help parents reassess and prioritise this crucial part of childhood.
A typical breakdown of a child’s day Consider a typical day for a child and how it is divided:
|
This breakdown totals 19.5 hours, leaving 4.5 hours for other activities.
How free play time adds up:
Some of this time is often taken up by scheduled commitments. For example:
- 2 hours of extracurricular activities
- 2 hours of homework and screen time
This leaves only 30 minutes for true free play or unstructured activities.
What is free play?
Free play (or self-directed play) is unstructured, unscheduled time where children are free to choose their activities without the influence of screens or organised plans. This can include playing with siblings, playing card games, building with LEGO, drawing, or simply daydreaming. It is a vital part of a child's routine, allowing them to explore, imagine, and engage without external influences.
Why is free play important?
Experts suggest that primary school children should have 1-2 hours of unstructured free play or downtime daily. This type of play supports a wide range of developmental benefits:
- Cognitive growth: Free play encourages problem-solving, decision-making, and creativity.
- Social and emotional skills: Playing with peers or on their own helps children learn how to navigate social interactions, manage emotions, and develop self-confidence.
- Physical activity: Outdoor and active play enhances motor skills and overall physical health.
- Independence and resilience: Time spent in unstructured activities helps children learn to entertain themselves and build resilience when facing challenges.
How to support more free play
Adults can help by:
- Prioritising free play time in the daily schedule.
- Limiting screen time to create space for spontaneous activities.
- Encouraging downtime that allows for daydreaming and quiet moments.
Ensuring a balance between structured activities, free play, and rest is key to children's healthy development. Unstructured play gives them the freedom to explore, create, and build confidence, helping them grow into resilient and well-rounded individuals.

FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY
This week has seen our school return to normal after the two-day closure due to Cyclone Alfred. Unfortunately, there have been some cancellations, which is understandable; however, the school has not sustained any damage. This week our Year 7 and 9 students commenced their NAPLAN both Reading and Writing tests, without any major disruption.
Today, our Year 10 students had the opportunity to attend the Future Careers showcase at UniSC, which provided students with insight into emerging careers and enabled them to determine their study choices leading into tertiary education and occupational training after high school.
Next week, our Year 11 students will have their first exam block, and parents are advised that students have been given their exam timetables. Normally, students attend school when they have an exam; however, they are welcome to attend school outside their exam schedule and use the study room as a base during the school day.
Families will also receive a letter this week outlining the switch to continuous reporting for Year 7-9. This will bring our junior secondary school in line with our senior year levels.

Pastoral Care Notes
An important communication tool used by staff is the issuing of “Pastoral Care Notes”. These are generated electronically and are designed to provide parents with timely feedback on the progress of students. Teachers are encouraged to recognise students engaging well with our programs, and proactively identify when behaviours are not meeting school expectations to assist with early intervention.
Process
When a teacher enters a Pastoral Care note, the system will automatically generate an email to you advising that an entry has been made. This email will include a link to GECO Parent Lounge where you will be able to read the information attached to the entry. Please note that the nature of the communications you will receive does not need a reply and is for information only. Staff will contact you directly if there are concerns.
Should parents require assistance accessing our GECO Parent Lounge, please contact our IT Helpdesk for assistance.

FROM THE DEAN OF CO-CURRICULUM
Last week, we hosted an exciting program in collaboration with Young Change Agents, empowering young students from Year 4-9 to become social entrepreneurs. The program encouraged students to see problems as opportunities, guiding them through an immersive, hackathon-style workshop where they identified challenges in their communities and developed creative solutions.
Led by facilitators, 40 students worked in teams to brainstorm, validate, prototype, and pitch their ideas. The young entrepreneurs tackled pressing issues within their communities, demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility and creativity.
Nine social enterprises were pitched, each offering unique solutions to the identified challenges:
- Talk to the Palm: An app that helps consumers identify products containing palm oil.
- Crab Composers: A recycling initiative turning beach plastic into hermit crab homes, funding music programs.
- What’s Up: An AI-assisted app providing guidance and emotional support for bullying victims.
- Locker.org: A virtual locker management system to help students stay organized.
- SEEM: Sustainable and inclusive activewear addressing common discomforts.
- Add Some Colour: A program supporting alternative religious activities at school.
- Support Superheroes: A lunchtime club promoting confidence and inclusion.
- Wave Warriors: A budget-friendly alternative to Nippers, promoting beach safety and conservation.
- Stray Homes: A recycled-material kennel initiative aiding in rehoming stray animals.
This inspiring initiative showcased the remarkable potential of young entrepreneurs, equipping them with the mindset, skillset, and toolset needed to drive meaningful change.

Inaugural Grammar Aquathlon
We successfully held our inaugural Aquathlon on Friday 28 February with over 60 competitors swimming and running their best. We had Mr Toby Coote and Mr Peter McKenzie, two of the Sunshine Coasts best coaches supporting us at the event.
Thank you to the parents and staff who supported the event and to our senior students supported our younger ones throughout the event and at the finish line. We look forward to our next Aquathlon in early October before the Regional trial event at Kawana where we will include a parent / staff event for fun!
Surf Lifesaving
Grammar has some exceptionally talented surf and beach athletes within our student and staff body. Some have been training all season and therefore it is such a shame that due to the recent Cyclone, the State Youth Championships have been cancelled this weekend on the Gold Coast.
In the recent QLD Beach Series Final, Amelie performed incredibly well, winning the overall state championship with the following results:
U15 Female Age Champion
- 3 x 1st flags
- 1x 1st sprints
- 2 x 2nd sprints
At the Branch competition, Amelie and Finn both competed well and achieved the following:
Amelie
- 1st U15 female beach sprint
- 1st U15 female beach flags
- 2nd all age relay
Finn
- 1st U13 male beach relay
- 1st U13 mixed beach relay
- 2nd U13 male Cameron relay
- 3rd 2 x 1km beach relay
- 6th U13 male beach flags
RUGBY
Last chance to register for the Club Rugby season!
We intend to enter a team in the U13, U15 and U17 club competitions, held on Friday nights across Term 2 and 3. So far, we have low numbers across all three teams and are in jeopardy of not entering these teams.

NETBALL
Academy Netball
Our Academy netballers continue to work hard this year, demonstrating dedication both on and off the court. Recently, they had the incredible opportunity to hear from special guest speaker Gabi Simpson; Australian Diamond #164 and Queensland Firebird #76.
Gabi shared valuable insights on the importance of owning your strengths. Focusing on several key themes, including the idea that success comes from owning and embracing individual strengths, providing them with valuable strategies to build confidence and self-belief. We look forward to seeing our netballers implement these important skills both on and off the court.
We look forward to welcoming Gabi back for another engaging session later this term.

School Netball
The 2025 Secondary Schools Netball Competition is well underway, with teams taking the court for Round 1 last week. It was great to see our netballers back in action as they represent Grammar.
Show your support for our netball teams on a Monday night at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association Courts on Fishermans Road.
Club Netball
Grading games commence this weekend at Fishermans Road and we look forward to cheering on our divisional teams as they compete. Good luck, Team Grammar!
SWIMMING
Independent District Swimming Carnivals
Grammar hosted the Independent District Primary and Secondary Swimming Carnivals recently, with many students setting records, collecting age champion trophies, age group trophies and winning event after event. Importantly, we also need to celebrate the Grammar swimmers who filled in last minute, those who swam in races knowing it wasn’t their fastest or favourite stroke but they were doing it for the team - a true ‘we not me’ attitude. We rightly celebrate our champions, but we must also celebrate those who provide depth and equally give their best.
BIG NEWS….we commend our Primary team for finishing third and our Secondary team for finishing second. Congratulations - we are hugely proud of every swimmer.
My sincere thanks to all staff who helped create these wonderful opportunities – Grammar Swimming and their coaches, Grammar Logistics, Mr Withers, Mr Henricks and most notably Mrs Halloran and Mrs Hoffman.
Congratulations to the following students and teams on their results.

All you need to bring is a towel, water bottle, covered shoes and a positive attitude. These sessions are supervised and led by a qualified personal trainer who can help create a training program for you.
We value our students and would like to celebrate success through sport. Please email news articles and a maximum of 3 photos to Mr Withers - awithers@scgs.qld.edu.au (Primary) and Mr Abrahams - jabrahams@scgs.qld.edu.au (Secondary) and we will try to include them in our fortnightly newsletters. It is important that we include all Grammar students involved in an event, so please try to mention the names of all participants in your article.

FROM THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
Secondary Japan Club – Term 1
Term 1 at Japan Club has been a fantastic celebration of Japanese culture and fun! It has been wonderful to welcome so many students and explore a diverse range of traditions – from Japanese Valentine’s Day and the beauty of kanji to pop culture, Girl’s Day, and our grand finale, “Summer Matsuri” featuring delicious summer noodles and sweet kakigori (shaved ice). As we take a break for now, we can’t wait to bring even more Japanese excitement in Term 2!

Walk for Myeloma
Join us on Sunday 30 March for Myeloma Australia's My Greatest Walk.
This grassroots campaign is driven by communities impacted by myeloma. It is a cause that has touched our hearts with the passing of our former Principal, Mrs Maria Woods. We are honoured to walk alongside our community to raise awareness for Myeloma.
