Prevention is better than cure
Prevention is better than cure was one of the key messages that we heard from globally recognised cyber-safety expert, Susan McLean, this week. Ms McLean presented customised sessions to the staff, the parents and the students covering all aspects of cyber-safety, personal responsibility, and cyberbullying. Whilst sobering, these conversations are necessary and will be ongoing.
The pros and cons of the digital age have been hotly contested in recent decades and the debates continue to intensify. We need to maximise the benefits of selectively using digital technologies in our personal and professional lives, while simultaneously managing and minimising the associated risks for ourselves and our students.
Where do schools fit into the complexities and context of our modern society?
Ms McLean reported that the number one non-academic (outside of the teaching and learning context) issue that schools manage daily, is the misuse of and/or illegal behaviours on digital and online communication technologies.
Perhaps it is the age of our ‘clients’ (students aged 6 -18), however at times I feel that schools are timeless. The nap on the mat, the picture books, Prep’s first chapel, formals and graduations, and lunchtime tiggy games - these are the moments we all remember. When we hear stories from our graduating classes or our Alumni, they always describe keystone moments, events, rituals, and rites of passage. Their recollections are emotive and descriptions of how they felt are a significant part of their presentations. It is, by contrast, quite jarring to listen to ‘big tech’ who espouse the value of scaling up, moving fast, digital solutions, first movers and early uptake. Adapt or perish! The endless use of the word exponential and the insistence that all the world’s problems can be solved using technology and AI.

On Monday, our staff gathered for our annual Professional Learning Day.
The staff began by considering the quote below:

In addition to providing an education for our students to resolve the big issues of the world, we are simultaneously providing a purpose and values-driven education. Grammar is situated in the Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere, and as such, we have developed a whole school purpose framework that aligns with the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals - Faith, People, Planet and Progress.
We also sought guidance from the Ethical Leadership Congress, held at Stanford University last month. The event covered a range of topics including climate change and cultural customs to AI and power dynamics. The speakers highlighted the complexity of these issues, as well as the concept of strategic abandonment. NYU’s Kwame Anthony Appiah reminded the audience that ethical questions are “messy, tangled in relationships, soaked in history, and sprinkled with uncertainty.”

1) How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen, David Brooks tells us:
- Human connection leads to relationships and relationships build community.
- Knowledge combined with human connection leads to cognitive transformation (learning is a social endeavour).
- Where do our shared humanity and human connections fit into this saturated digital world? We are a world in social and relational crisis.
2) Nexus - A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI, Yuval Noah Hariri examines:
- Information is not simply raw material nor fact; neither is it a weapon. Nexus explores the hopeful middle ground (or nexus) between the binary extremes of right or wrong, by reintroducing the context of our shared humanity and human history.
In closing, we recognise that in addition to educating young people, we are grappling with some big topics in schools: social media; AI and the increasingly digital world; the youth mental health crisis; increasing social isolation and loneliness; and child safeguarding within and across the industry.

Orbit - the new Grammar Parent App is now live!
We’re pleased to offer this new school platform for parents, designed to enhance how you access and manage school-related information. Developed by TASS, our current Student Information System, this new application—called Orbit—offers a more intuitive, centralised way to stay informed and connected. It replaces our existing Digistorm app, which is no longer available on Google Play and will cease to function from August. Orbit is built around the daily needs of parents, offering simplified access to school news, updates, and tools — including a direct link to GECO.

Traffic Notice: New Speed Bump Installed for Student Safety
Please be advised that a new speed bump has been installed on the school campus to enhance safety for all students, staff, and pedestrians.
When entering the school through the main gate, the speed bump is situated at the eastern end of the causeway, at the entrance to the roundabout.
The installation of the speed bump aims to slow down buses and create a safer environment for students, particularly during peak times such as morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
We kindly ask all parents to approach the area with extra caution, slow down, and be mindful of pedestrians.

CDC Bus Service - Important Changes

Holidays are such a terrific chance to recharge the mind, body and spirit, for staff and students, and anyone lucky enough to have them! It is the moments of stillness that provide me with a chance to reflect on the term that has been, and look forward with anticipation to the term that is to come. I can look back and see where God has strengthened, encouraged, and guided my steps and I can trust that He will continue to be faithful and loving in all that lies before me.
On campus, there is a buzz amongst the students as they return with energetic chatter and bright smiles, with many year levels preparing to head off on exciting camp adventures. Camps are such a fantastic way to get to know each other, work as a team, and sometimes step out of your comfort zone, usually with a whole lot of laughter.
As we begin this new term, my prayer for our school community is that God will fill us all with peace, joy, and hope.

Maintaining Connection
School holidays often give us the chance to enjoy time with our kids and connect in ways that can be difficult to achieve during the busy school term. Enjoying playful, fun moments with them is not just good for the soul — it’s so important for our attachment with them. I have been enjoying lots of fun discussions with my kids lately, prompted by some ideas shared by #dynamicparents on their Instagram account. Here are some of my favourites, perfect for prompting small (sometimes hilarious) moments of connection:
- You get 3 wishes, but none can be for stuff. What do you wish for?
- If we won a holiday to spend two weeks anywhere in the world and you got to choose, where would we go?
- If animals could talk, which one do you think would be the funniest to talk to?
- If you found a friendly alien in your backyard who wanted to learn about Earth, what three things would you show them?
- If your toys could talk, what would they say about you?
- If you had a “YES” day, what would you do?
Another great way to foster connection is around the dinner table. Family Roast is a fantastic resource that offers themed discussion prompts designed to bring families together over shared meals. It is a fun, low-pressure way to open up conversations and hear each other’s thoughts, dreams, and stories - one question at a time.

FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
It is wonderful to welcome parents and students back for Term 3 after a well-earned break. Except for a few rainy days, I hope you were able to take advantage of the amazing weather on the Sunshine Coast, and for those who travelled, I hope you had a chance to make memories.
All families should have been able to access report cards from the last day of term. If you have had difficulty with this, please let your child’s Class Teacher know or the relevant Dean - Mrs Brutnell P-2 or Mr Anderson 3-6. If you have any immediate questions for the Class Teacher, please make an appointment. Later in the term, you will receive an invitation to Parent Teacher Interviews, to meet with teachers to discuss your child’s development.
On Tuesday, we were fortunate to have Susan McLean speak with Year 5 and 6 students and parents. Susan sent a very strong message about the importance of online safety. One very important message that she shared with students was that under laws in Australia, students under 13 should not be signed up to a social media account, and that if students have signed up, then they have not been honest in accepting the terms and conditions. She also spoke candidly about the fact that many students have “friends online” whom they have never met in person, and as such, there is no guarantee that this “friend” is who they claim to be. Many students were not aware of the potential dangers associated with online activities, nor the need to protect their personal information. There was certainly a message there for all of us who were fortunate to hear Susan speak. Thank you to those parents who attended; please spread the message to others who may not have had the opportunity to attend.








Our Primary URSTRONG Program assists our commitment to building a culture of kindness and equipping our students with the skills they need to develop healthy, feel-good friendships. Our Primary Friendship Week and Assembly in Week 3 provide a wonderful promotion of this program within the school community. Mrs Brutnell and Mr Anderson have sent communication to our families through the Primary Parent GECO Page this week. Parents are invited to explore the range of resources to understand the messages and strategies we develop for our students.
We have been quite pleased with the appearance of Primary Students and their uniforms in the first half of the year. It is important that students continue to do their best to present themselves correctly, wearing the appropriate uniform to school each day. It is valuable to start off Term 3 with a focus on supporting students to wear and take pride in their uniform, and we thank parents for their support. The Student Journal and Family Handbook provides details for families if there are any questions regarding uniforms.
An important day for student presentation is on School Photo Day, which will be held on Wednesday, 20 August for the Primary School. Information will be distributed soon.
Term 3 always provides many activities and events for both students and families, and we look forward to partnering with you at this very exciting and productive time.
Year 5 Camp
Best wishes to the students and staff attending the Year 5 Camp next week. Camps are a very important element of the school year; they offer unique educational opportunities outside the traditional classroom setting and provide students with the chance to engage in hands-on learning experiences that are not possible within school walls.
Camps also foster personal growth and development. They encourage students to step out of their comfort zones, build resilience and develop independence; simply being away from home can significantly boost self-confidence and adaptability.
Camp experiences strengthen social bonds among students and between students and teachers. These bonds often extend back to the school environment, enhancing classroom dynamics and creating a more supportive and inclusive community.
Most importantly, if I am to believe the recollections of the Lifelong Learners on Foundation Day, camps create memories that students cherish for years to come. Such memories not only enrich their school life but also contribute to their overall happiness and wellbeing.

FROM THE ACTING HEAD OF SECONDARY
The school has implemented improved communication methods for parent approvals for excursions, Co-Curricular activities, and events. Parent approval for all activities is now being managed via the Parent Lounge on GECO. The simplest way to access this is via the new ‘Orbit’ app and all families are encouraged to transition to this as their primary method for accessing school information.
Parents will receive notifications when there are new events to approve. We ask that parents please check in on a regular basis to ensure all approvals are actioned in a timely manner.

Camp Week
Week 2 sees the secondary school commence our program of camps for Years 7-9 and 11, World of Work Week for Year 10, and assessment preparation for Year 12, culminating in the Year 12 Formal.
Staff have been preparing well to manage these complex events and we look forward to rewarding experiences for all. If students are unable to attend, parents are asked to communicate with the relevant Head of Year.
Digital Education
This week, students have received education on important topics relating to the internet and the law. Guest speaker Susan McLean educated students on the themes of Respect, Responsibility and Reputation, and how to minimise personal risk. Key discussions were held on topics including:
- Digital reputation
- Cyber bullying
- Online Grooming
- Sextortion
- Consent
We encourage parents to have open conversations with students on these topics as we help young people learn that choices in the online space have consequences in the offline world.
We welcome the fresh opportunities that each new semester brings for our students, and encourage parents to reach out early if support is needed.

Subject Selections for 2026
We are pleased to inform you that the subject selection process for the 2026 academic year is now underway.
Students in Years 7 to 9 are required to submit their subject preferences by Friday, 1 August at 3:00 PM. Each student will receive an email titled "Subject Choice 2026", which contains a unique weblink and code to access the online selection form.
Students in Year 10 will have the chance to submit their preferences between 28 July and 15 August.
It is important that students take the time to carefully consider their choices. The school timetable and resource allocations are built around these preferences, and our primary goal is to ensure as many students as possible are successfully placed in their preferred subjects. Subject changes made after the timetable is published can significantly impact the efficiency of this process and will be limited.
We appreciate your support in encouraging thoughtful and timely selections. If you have any questions or would like further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email or arrange a time to speak with the relevant Head of Year, the pathways team, or me in person.

We are excited to announce that our next production will be High School Musical, hitting the stage in 2026!
Auditions for the musical will occur in Term 3, Week 3 for lead roles, minor lead roles and chorus roles. Any student currently in Year 6-11 is eligible to audition. After signing up, students will need to prepare for their audition. A confirmed audition day and time will be emailed to students at the end of Term 3, Week 2.

Equestrian
We were excited to have seven riders from our Grammar Equestrian Team competing in the Interschool Queensland Equestrian State Championships at Toowoomba during the holidays. Congratulations to Mia, Ivy, Jorja, Gracie, Amelia, Charlotte and Birdie for their fabulous results at the competition in very cold, wet and windy conditions. Unfortunately, Finn’s horse was lame so she couldn’t compete.
Grammar was awarded Champion Primary School thanks to the wonderful results from our Primary riders, Amelia M, Charlotte and Birdie.
Three of our riders, Mia, Charlotte and Birdie qualified to compete at the Australian Interschool Championships in Sydney in September with Jorja being named a Reserve.

Pool Lifesaving
We are proud to report that Reagan C has been representing Australia with great success at the 2025 Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Wales.
Reagan's achievements include:
- Leading an International Lifesaving Sport Development Session.
- Receiving her Australian Swim in a Capping Ceremony.
- Gold Medallist in the 200m Obstacle Race with a four-second PB.
- Gold Medallist in the 4x50m Obstacle Relay.

Run Club
Olympian Juan Van Deventer leads the Grammar Run Club on Monday mornings on the training oval at the top of school from 7:00 - 7:45 am.
It is fantastic to see so many new students and parents at the Grammar Run Club. These sessions are open to all staff, students P-12 and their parents. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with members of the Grammar community, get fit and have fun in a supportive environment. All abilities are welcome!
Sailing
Earlier this month, the Queensland GILL Youth Week took place in Brisbane at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. This competition saw over 100 youth sailors race in 10 different classes of sailboats, all under 23 years of age.
GILL Youth Week 2025 was a tough one! The winds ranged from a little as 3 knots to highs of 26! This year’s competition was strong, with many sailors fighting for top results.
This year, Grammar had two podium sailors compete in two different classes. Jack J (Year 3) competed in the Optimist Green Fleet alongside 10 other young athletes. Jack placed 3rd in his fleet. This was very well deserved for this young sailor as he managed a 1st in one race!
Olivia B also competed this year in the ILCA 4 division, which had 28 competitors all looking for that top spot. Within the regatta, she placed 7th in one of her races. Overall, Olivia placed 2nd female and 14th overall after a challenging regatta.
Congratulations to both competitors.

QISSN
Our Grammar 1st VII Netball team competed in the 2026 Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball competition in Bundaberg. Now in its 25th year, QISSN is Queensland’s premier netball carnival, bringing together 64 schools over five action-packed days. It’s an incredible opportunity to compete at a high level, build connections between schools, and make unforgettable memories both on and off the court.
Under the guidance of our Director of Netball, Shannon Eagland, and Head Coach, Layla Bahgat, our team gained valuable playing experience and made some unforgettable memories both on and off the court. Congratulations to all involved.




Thunder X Grammar Performance Camp
The Sunshine Coast Thunder X Grammar Netball Performance Camp was a roaring success!
The Camp saw 100 registered participants receive a comprehensive high-performance experience, including specialist technical and tactical training from experienced netball coaches and Thunder players, strength and conditioning, performance workshops, high-performance education, video analysis, and a Q&A with Sunshine Coast Lightning netballers.

RUGBY
Congratulations to our Queensland Country representatives: Jess Cross, Sarena Manssen, Maya Uylangco, Charlie Meredith, Nate Kerin-Bird and Max Coonan. Charlie and Nate will now compete in the Emerging Reds Cup, aiming for selection in the Queensland Reds U16 team.
Well done also to our Queensland U18 representatives who participated in the Australian School Rugby competition at the Sunshine Coast Stadium.
Meg Fortune showcased her talent in the QLD Open Girls 7s team, while Rowan Nichol and Owen Heathwood competed strongly as part of the QLD U18 Boys Team 1. Although Adrien de Klerk was selected for QLD Team 2, he was unfortunately sidelined due to injury.

Swimming Queensland Tilly Cup 'Possibles and Probables' Training Day – The day featured stroke-specific training squads, workshops with guest athletes and expert insights from Sport Psychologist Wendy Swift and 4x Olympian Suki Brownsdon.

Grammar Fitness Centre
Attention all secondary students and athletes
Improve your physical and mental health by exercising regularly, using the Grammar Fitness Centre, free of charge.
The school gym is located in the Aquatic Centre and is available for use by students in years 7-12 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 3:15 - 5:00 pm. All you need to bring is a towel, water bottle, covered shoes and a positive attitude. These sessions are supervised and led by a qualified personal trainer who can help create a training program for you.
We value our students and would like to celebrate success through sport. FROM THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
What an incredible day of fun and community as we celebrated all things French for “le quatorze juillet” today. Our Year 10, 11 and 12 French students stepped up into their leadership roles to host a range of activities across the school. We started the day with our special Bastille Day food-themed assembly and our Primary students looked fantastic in their French themed outfits.
The day kicked off with some yummy treats at morning tea, face-painting and photos. At lunch time our Year 10 French students whipped up crêpes for secondary students and over in Primary there were many activities to choose from – all run by our secondary French students. A huge thanks to the Senior French students in Years 10, 11 and 12 for sharing their love of language learning; and of course to our French Language Ambassadors, Lily and Ruby, we just could not do it without you! We look forward to sharing more photos and highlights in our next newsletter. Merci mille fois à tout le monde.
LTQ Writing Competition Results
A large number of our language students put their creative writing skills to the test in this year’s annual LTQ Writing Competition. We commend all students whose interest for their imagination, effort and enthusiasm. A special congratulations goes to the students listed below, whose entries were recognised for their excellence.
Welcome back to Faustine! (French exchange student)
This term, we are delighted to welcome back Faustine (a French exchange student from Aurillac) to our Grammar family. Faustine has been busy catching up with her previous host family and is looking forward to seeing old friends in Year 12 again. A special thanks to her three host families for welcoming Faustine back.
Having international students on campus enriches the lives of all our students, not just those hosting. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for our visitors to engage in a wide range of activities and gain a broader experience of life in Australia. We are looking forward to welcoming a larger group of 25 students from Aurillac in Week 3, as part of our sister school exchange.
