As we close out the end of the academic year, I am writing to you to share an exciting update on the progress of our new Primary Build Stage One.
The building, which will accommodate our Year 1-3 students from January 2025, will be fitted out and ready for the commencement of the new school year. This purpose-built facility has been thoughtfully designed to provide a vibrant learning environment and demonstrates our school's commitment to excellence in education.
Stage Two Primary Building commencing over the Christmas Holidays
Looking ahead, Stage Two of the Primary build, designed to cater to Years 4-6, is scheduled to commence (next week) in December 2024. This marks another significant milestone in developing our Primary School campus, creating a seamless transition for students as they progress through their schooling journey. Stage Two is due for completion in early 2026.
Judicious transition, safety is paramount and offsets moving forwards
As part of the Stage Two design process, the school commissioned a qualified consultant to undertake a bushfire risk assessment. Based on updated regulatory requirements, we have been advised of the need to establish a fire trail along Grammar School Way to enhance community safety. In partnership with Badge’s construction team and surveyors, the finalised design reflects a significant redesign effort to reduce the environmental impact and minimise vegetation clearing as much as possible.
Mitigations
While it is necessary to remove some mature trees for fire safety, these will be repurposed as mulch for our campus. Additionally, materials from the demolition – such as concrete, steel, bricks and timber – will be sorted onsite for recycling.
As part of our commitment to biodiversity and environmental stewardship, we will
undertake extensive reforestation and rehabilitation works, including the relocation of existing trees. These will include managing plant species in adjacent bushland to bolster ecological resilience and the planting of $80,000 worth of new trees near the training oval on the opposite side of our campus. We look forward to involving our community in reforestation projects.

In close consultation and collaboration with the Dawes family, the beloved Friendship
Chair has been relocated to a new home near our Stage One Primary build, where it will continue to be an integral part of our students’ experience at Grammar.
In summary, whilst we are aware that progress and updating of buildings on our school site are challenging, and at times, difficult to comprehend, I want to reassure you that I am on this journey with you; every considered step in the process and in the stewardship and development of our beautiful campus.
The Cafeteria, the Stage One building, and now the Stage Two building have been carefully planned, reviewed and analysed, with Grammar upholding the values and principles of our school in every interaction and negotiation with external providers and the authorities. In particular, bushfire and fire regulatory requirements are to ensure our safety and are mandated for any new build and development of our site.
Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this next chapter. In the words of a current staff member whom I hold in very high regard; “we must remain committed to balancing safety, practicality and our responsibility to the environment”.

Our annual Grammar Games was a huge success! Thank you to all of our volunteers for assisting us in making this a memorable experience for all Primary students. It was a fantastic day to celebrate the year which included a fun-filled day by the pool, with games, inflatables and lots of water fun.

This new orientation format will allow families to meet classroom teachers, drop off book packs, finalise BYOD onboarding, and learn more about the exciting opportunities in 2025. CDC Queensland - Changes to 2025 School Bus Services
At our recent Years 7-11 Secondary Awards evening our devotion focused on humility and this quote, ‘Greatness is not found in possessions, power, position, or prestige. It is discovered in goodness, humility, service, and character.’ (William Arthur Ward). Jesus Christ modelled humility perfectly while he was on earth and also taught about it, ‘For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ (Luke 14:11)
It is interesting that Jesus’ brother James wrote this about Jesus, ‘Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (James 4:10) May we each continue to discover that goodness, humility, service, and character is found in the life of Jesus and that through humbling ourselves before him and choosing faith in him we too can live a life of humility.

We often underestimate just how important it is to meet our basic needs in order to maintain our overall well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to get caught up in work, responsibilities, and commitments, leading us to neglect the essentials like drinking enough water, eating balanced meals, or getting sufficient rest. These simple acts are often overlooked but are foundational to how we feel both physically and mentally.
When we make a conscious effort to get the basics right, our sense of wellness can improve significantly—and the best part is, it happens without the need for drastic lifestyle changes. Take a moment to reflect: Are you meeting your most basic needs? If not, what small steps could you take to improve? Perhaps you could challenge yourself to drink an extra glass of water each day, incorporate more nutritious snacks, or commit to going to bed half an hour earlier.
Small, intentional steps like these can make a world of difference. Give it a try, and after some time, pause to reflect on any positive changes in how you feel. Notice whether you have more energy, improved focus, or just a better mood overall. These tiny adjustments could be the key to enhancing your well-being and creating a foundation for greater self-care.

It has been wonderful to welcome so many families into the school in the past two weeks with the range of events that have taken place. This week our students met with their 2025 teacher. Our youngest students were able to do so in the new Primary Building. Students were very impressed and excited about what they saw. They will begin 2025 in the new rooms.

FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY
The school year has come to an end and this week we had the opportunity to celebrate the hard work that our students display in the classroom. The Secondary Awards night that was held on Wednesday evening was a great opportunity for the student’s academic achievements to be recognised. I want to pass on my congratulations to all of our students for their efforts and achievements across 2024. We now anxiously await the release of our Year 12 results on December 13.
Currently, our UK Tour group is on the ground and enjoying the brisk weather conditions, I trust that they have a fabulous time and make the most of the opportunities available to them. Next week our Senior Robotics team will travel to Sydney to compete in the First Tech National Championships in Sydney.
I wish to acknowledge the wonderful work of Mrs Alison Ward who will be leaving us to take up a position at Grace Lutheran College much closer to home. She has been a wonderful advocate for our students and her work over the past 14 years particularly as a Head of Year is greatly appreciated.
This year there has been considerable growth in our population and 2025 very much looks like our numbers will continue to increase. I am very much looking forward to welcoming the new students and their families next year and trust that they will very much enjoy being a part of our wonderful school community.

FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS
As part of an ongoing review of the school colours processes, we wish to advise the following information.
Parents of students who have been awarded colours in 2023 and 2024 may choose to have their child’s blazer embroidered with these awards (please note that this is optional and not compulsory). The P&F, in conjunction with the Grammar Shop, will be collecting pockets for embroidery in 2025 and the following conditions will apply to this process.
- Parents must remove the pocket/s to be embroidered from the blazer. Only pockets will be accepted, not whole blazers. This allows students to continue wearing their blazer for school commitments during the embroidery process.
- Parents must supply the pocket/s and copies of colours certificates pinned together in a plastic sleeve to the uniform shop.
- Pockets will be accepted from Monday 10 February 2025 (Week 3) until Friday 7 March 2025 (Week 7) and sent to the embroiderer on a weekly basis.
- Payment for embroidery must be made at the Grammar Shop. Pockets will not be accepted without payment. The cost of embroidery is expected to be $10.90 per line.
- The embroiderer will be able to re-attach pockets for $10.00 if parents wish to arrange this with them independently.
The school can assist with providing copies of colours awarded in 2023 and these will be available at the Grammar Shop if requested. We will communicate again with all families in 2025 with reminders and further instructions for this process.

FROM THE PATHWAYS DEPARTMENT
In previous years at Grammar, work experience has been run as a block for all students in Year 10, so everyone has done their placement(s) in the same week. In the past 12 months, Independent Schools Queensland has issued new requirements for the management of work experience programs in schools. We are now required to complete individual risk assessments for each placement for each student before the placement can be approved. This creates an unsustainable administrative burden when 140+ students are doing placements at the same time, and some students are doing two placements in that one week.
As a result, from 2025 we are no longer running with a fixed-dates block model for work experience. Our new model for work experience will ensure students are better able to access opportunities that fit in with employers’ needs and constraints. It will also free students up to do work experience at any time, not just in Year 10. (Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are legally allowed up to 30 days’ work experience per year).
Students will have several options for work experience:
- We expect most students who wish to do work experience placements will do so during school holiday periods – this is what happens in other independent schools, and is a good use of the additional holiday time we have in excess of what is available to State School students.
- For Year 10 students, week 2 of Term 3 (Tuesday to Friday only) will be “World of Work Week”. This week will be packed with activities like visits to universities, mentoring sessions with employers, and visits to different kinds of workplaces. Students may opt to do a work experience placement in that week instead of attending those other activities.
- In special cases, students may apply to do a work experience placement during Term time, but there will be a strict approval process in place, and applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students will need to demonstrate they have made a sincere effort to organise their placements outside of curriculum time and have avoided assessment time, and they will need to demonstrate there were no alternative dates made available by the employer that was during school holiday periods.

FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
For over 14 years, the Science Department has run the Year 11 Biology field excursion to support students’ understanding and application of knowledge in relation to their senior ecological studies. On Tuesday 29th October, the sun was shining and the excitement was real as students boarded the coach, accompanied by their teachers Mrs Haywood, Mr Bessell, Mr Boyd and Mrs Wheeler.
Prior to this day, students had been engaging with the first part of their Year 12 Biology course (Unit 3: Biodiversity and the interconnectedness of life), which explores biodiversity within ecosystems, biotic and abiotic components, population dynamics, classification, and more.
Whilst at Wurtulla Beach, species diversity investigations were completed throughout the sand dune community. Faunal and floral data was recorded and abiotic factors were measured. A wonderful array of life inhabits this community.
The iconic and robust Spinifex grass of the incipient dunes looks beautiful but is spikey. Spinifex provides a natural shelter for native species and has been used by Indigenous Australians for food, tools and fibre. The creeping flowering succulent known as Pig’s face (said to resemble exactly that – you may need to use your imagination there!), to Native cherry and Snake vines, gave students an appreciation as to how life adapts to an environment.
The Biology cohort continued to their second location; the rocky seashore community of Point Cartwright. At low tide, the rock pools and platforms were teaming with life, including coral, anemones, Sea Hares, molluscs, sea cucumbers and even a Hydrophis elegans (sea snake)! Experiencing the wildlife in our own backyard, allowed students to really make invaluable links between their Biology syllabus and the real world.

Student Spotlight
Year 10 student Freya G travelled to Canberra this week with over 100 advocates of JDRF Australia to speak with politicians about continuing funding the JDRF Clinical Research Network (CRN), which is working tirelessly to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Despite being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a baby, 15-year-old Freya gives 100% to everything she does. Over the years she has won numerous state titles for swimming, claiming a bronze medal at the inaugural Australian School Games in swimming in July this year, whilst still attending school and succeeding academically. Type 1 diabetes does not have a cure. Freya has to wear an insulin pump to keep her alive. Before she moved to wearing a pump, she had up to 10 needles a day, as well as a similar number of finger pricks to check her blood glucose levels. Technology has greatly improved the lives of people with type 1 and Freya is passionate about ensuring this continues.

UK Tour
Our Rugby and Netball teams are off on an exciting three-week tour of the UK and France! Over 60 students from Years 9 to 12 will take on top schools like Millfield School and Clifton College, competing in 8 netball matches and 7 rugby games.
Beyond the competition, they’ll explore iconic destinations, including London, Edinburgh and Paris, visiting landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and the Louvre. This tour is an amazing opportunity for growth, teamwork and unforgettable experiences. Good luck to our teams as they represent Grammar on the international stage!

The Equestrian Queensland Annual Awards were held in Brisbane last weekend and our Equestrian Team was named as one of four finalists for the Interschool Queensland School of the Year Award. Although we didn’t win, this is such a wonderful recognition of the hard work and dedication of our riders.
Amelia B was named Reserve Champion in the EQ Next Gen Leaderboard in Eventing. Amelia has had a very successful year both in Eventing and Combined Training and so this was also a wonderful recognition of her commitment to Equestrian.
Cassidy competed at the Australian Show Jumping Championships at Willinga Park a few weeks ago. It was such an amazing experience for her and she placed 8th in the Junior Opal Final. This was a wonderful achievement as her horse, Napoleon, had only recently returned to work after a paddock injury. Congratulations to Cassidy.

Pool Lifesaving
After a very successful 2024 World Lifesaving Championships, the Grammar Pool Lifesaving Club has been preparing for the 2025 Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships. The Championships will be held in Sydney from 16 - 18 January.
We will have the largest contingent in the history of the club competing at these championships, with 50 talented members, including 10 students. We wish them all well for the Championships and look forward to reporting on their individual and team performances.

RUGBY
After a three-year hiatus, Tate’s Mates returned with great success, welcoming around 50 enthusiastic young players aged 6–10, both boys and girls, for an action-packed day of rugby fun. Supported by current First XV players and dedicated Club volunteer coaches, the clinic focused on creating an inclusive and enjoyable environment for all involved. Participants engaged in a variety of activities designed to develop core rugby skills, including catch-pass, evasion, tackling, and breakdown work, all while fostering teamwork and camaraderie.
The emphasis on fun and engagement ensured smiles and laughter throughout the day as players learned and played alongside their peers and mentors. The success of this session has set the stage for future clinics, with plans already in motion for another Tate’s Mates event in the new year. It was a fantastic way to reignite the spirit of junior rugby and inspire the next generation of players, boys and girls alike!

From the French classrooms
Our end of term program has allowed us to delve a little deeper into French Christmas cultural experiences and to put our language learning to good use from Year 4 to Year 10. From fun French games, Eiffel Tower building, Bûche de Noël making, Guess Who class competitions and Christmas Escape Room challenges, there has been plenty of authentic language use on show. We would also like to wish all our families a wonderful Christmas holiday and can’t wait to hear about any visits to francophone destinations!
From the Japanese classrooms
As the year draws quickly to a close, our Japanese classrooms have been buzzing with festive activities! In Japan, Christmas is a time to enjoy delicious food and connect with friends and family, much like our end-of-year celebrations. Students enjoyed a variety of language games, script challenges, Christmas cake decorating, cup noodle design party, and DIY onigiri and gyoza parties. It’s been a joyful way to embrace Japanese culture. Wishing all our families a peaceful holiday and look forward to hearing about your Summer adventures in 2025.

Backpacks for the Shack
Thanks to the support of our community, combined with the generosity of our Year 5 students who donated the funds raised at their annual Market Day Stall, we are proud to supply over 150 backpacks filled with essential school supplies for families in need across the Sunshine Coast.
The Shack Community Centre collected the backpacks on Wednesday and will distribute them to families across the Sunshine Coast this Christmas.
We are proud of our partnership with The Shack, which has been ongoing for over 14 years and look forward to many more years supporting the important work they do within our community.

A special welcome to all our new families, it is wonderful to have you join us. The following communication is aimed at assisting Primary parents with the commencement of schooling on 28 January.
Following the departure of Mr Vant, Mr Paul Anderson will be the Acting Head of Primary 3-6 for Semester One. Mr Anderson will work closely with students, teachers and parents in Years 3-6 to support students wellbeing and operations in the Primary School. Mr Paul Somerville will be replacing Mr Anderson in 5PA.
Arrival Times Week One
The beginning of the school year is traditionally a very busy time when students return to school and with the current building works your assistance is required to assist in making our morning and afternoons as efficient as possible by following the directions of our Ground Staff.
To allow for late arrivals in this first week, Primary student attendance rolls will not be finalised until 9:00 am.
From Week 2, we will return to regular roll marking processes.

This year, all students in Years 1 to 6 will leave the classroom at 3:05 pm. Students will be walked down to the Kiss and Go and bus areas unless they are met at the classrooms by their parents. Please consider which point of entry into the school you need to utilise when picking up students. Please ensure your child knows the location that you intend to collect them from; this will ensure that they are waiting at the correct area. The Kiss and Go area will continue to operate, as will the drop-off and pick-up option at the front of the Chapel. The Tear Drop traffic zone is only available for Prep pick-up and drop-off. Please see the traffic map above for more details on which entrance you need to enter for the different drop-off and pick-up areas.

Book Pack Drop Off
Families are invited to bring their student/s book packs to school before the first day to avoid doing so on busy school mornings. Book packs can be placed on the bag racks or lockers outside your child’s classroom. They should be sealed and labelled.

Maroochy River Rowing Club is running a Learn to Row program from 7–13 July, open to high school students of all year levels. This is a fantastic introduction to rowing—no experience required—and a great way for students to stay active during the school holidays.
The course runs across six mornings, and all equipment is provided as well as a hot healthy breakkie afterwards. It’s $250 per person and offers a solid foundation in rowing technique, teamwork, and water safety.
We’d love to welcome some Grammar students along and help them explore a new sport in a supportive environment.
Rowing is a fantastic sport—not just for the super fit and coordinated, but also for kids who haven’t yet found their place in traditional school sports. We’ve had incredible feedback from parents of children on the spectrum or those who previously wanted nothing to do with any sport that didn’t involve a gaming console. Some of those kids are now among our strongest rowers, proudly winning medals at regattas. Our vision is to help young people step away from screens and into a new environment that challenges and grows their brains, their bodies, and their friendships.
